 The Barbarian Keep
Kull was born a barbarian from the hills of the ancient continent of Atlantis.
Fleeing from his tribe because of a blood-fued, Kull was captured and made a slave at the oars of a galley.
King Kull's early history sounds very much like the career of Robert E. Howard's other character, Conan; the main difference being that King Kull is much more introspective than Conan.

Kull is a barbarian from Atlantis, an outcast disowned by his people because he gave a girl destined to be burned alive a merciful death.
Now Kull must defend against treason, the worldly powers of ambitious noblemen, and the dark magic of unholy wizards from the unfathomable past of ancient Valusia and even elder days.
Kull is typical of Howard's sword-wielding heroes: a simpleminded man of strong physical build, a barbarian, superstitious, but justly so in a world where magic is real, an awesome warrior, a man of most simple morals.

I'm reading KING KULL right now, the 1976 British edition, edited by Glenn Lord and some of the stories were apparently finished by Lin Careter, it has a map of Valusia by Carter at the start of the book.
Kull's philosophy is yet to be formed throughout the stories, whereas Conan's philosophy is fully formed and in play.
What a switcheroo when he became king of a civilized nation! I guess his attitude then was that a leader was supposed to be loyal to his followers, and craftmanship demanded that he be a conscientious king.

Kull seemed confident when he entered Iraina's guest chambers, not realizing it wasn't "the stirrings of lust he perceives--but the calling of blood to blood." Iraina proposed a toast to her upcoming victory, and Kull living to serve her.

From the First to the Hyborian Age
Save for Kull's home isles and the Pitish isles, it's the westernmost of the lands on the "Thurian" continent, the one facing where the blessed land of the Valar is. How fitting, then, to call it "Valos"---Power Fortress---and to have it corrupted, over centuries, to the name "Valusia".
By Kull's time, the empires such as Valusia and Grondar are decadent, effete remnents of a once mighty people.....Grondar is called "less cultured" than her sister empires, with Valusia perhaps originally being a subject kingdom where many of the more cultured migrated to.

As to the origin of the name Howard picked for his Pictish king, Weber comments that ravens (Bran is Gaelic for raven), according to Norse myth, are birds of battle, foretellers of bloodshed, and carrion-eaters.
Kull chaffs under his responsibility and says "Tu, chief councilor, would say my life belongs to Valusia, and I have no right to risk it—".
By contrast, the Pictish king embraces this responsibility; he later tells Cormac: "A king belongs to his people, and cannot let either his own feelings or the lives of men influence him." In drawing distinctions between Howard's protagonists, this can not be over stressed.

deseretnews.com - Movie review: Kull the Conqueror | Deseret Morning News Web edition
It's easy to dismiss "Kull the Conqueror" as a "Conan the Barbarian" wannabe crossed with television's "Hercules: The Legendary Journeys." After all, "Kull" was conceived by pulp writer Robert E. Howard, who also created "Conan," and the movie stars Kevin Sorbo, whose day job is playing "Hercules" on TV.
And, indeed, "Kull the Conqueror" proves to be just another routine sword-and-sandals action yarn, of the kind that fell out of fashion some years ago.
The primary plot devices have to do with an evil witch (Tia Carrere) being resurrected, then attempting to seduce Kull into joining her as she attempts to take over the kingdom (or is that the world?), along with Kull's true love for one of the women in his harem (Karina Lombard).

For the Kull stories, Howard, for the first time, created a ‘Pre-Cataclysmic’ age of the earth, an age long before the dawn of recorded history.

It centers upon a conspiracy by a race of Serpent Men to kill the king and, by taking on the semblances of Kull and his chief councilors, to seize control of the ancient kingdom of Valusia.
