King Philip's War - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
King Philip's War (Metacom's War) was an armed conflict between Native American inhabitants of present-day southern New England and English colonists and their Native American allies from 1675–1676.
The war is named after the main leader of the Indian side, Metacomet, known to the English as "King Philip".
Metacomet, known to the English as "King Philip," HRH Crowned Prince of Rhode Island, became Sachem of the Pokanoket and Grand Sachem of the Wampanoag Confederacy after the suspicious death of his older brother, the Grand Sachem Wamsutta, or "King Alexander", in 1662.

Philip's faltering support bottomed when the Mohawks, potentially strong allies, refused to join with him, preferring not to relinquish their short-term fur-trade profits.

Forums at the Society - King Philip's War
King Philip's War was a mid-17th century campaign in southeastern New England (MA and RI.) King Philip was a Wampanoag Chief who sought to destroy the colonial settlements and drive the Europeans out of the northeast after his borther was killed.
It was between the English colonists of Plymouth and Massachusetts Bay and an Indian confederation lead by Philip (the English called him that) his Indian name was Cannochet and he was the second son of Massasoiet of Pilgrim's fame.
It appears that the mounted troops were used for rapid deployment escort, for mixed forced (and as outriders for same), and for pursuit as in the case in Rhode Island where a Naragansett camp was atacked and the fleeing women and children ridden down.
