The Scorpion King - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Scorpion King is a 2002 movie starring The Rock (Dwayne Johnson), Michael Clarke Duncan, Kelly Hu and Grant Heslov, and is directed by Chuck Russell.
The name itself is a reference to a disputably real king during the protodynastic period of Egyptian history, King Scorpion.
The sorceress's name, Cassandra, is a reference to the daughter of Priam, king of Troy, who was given the gift to see the future by her lover the Greek god Apollo.

 "The Scorpion King" - Salon
There's lots to look at in "The Scorpion King," starting with the upper bod of World Wrestling Federation star Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson: His plumped-up, oil-slicked pecs are so acutely defined they could jump off the screen and spin off into their own sequel.
Even the animals in "The Scorpion King" are superior specimens: The picture boasts the comeliest camel I've ever seen, a glamorous creature whose fluff has been pruned and permed to cream-colored perfection -- and with none of those unsightly, unidentifiable dingle-dos sported by your garden-variety movie dromedary.
The Scorpion King and his sorcerer hottie do get it on, premaritally, but Russell gives us only the vaguest outline of the deed: There's a little bit of skin-on-skin, followed by the equivalent of birds singing in the postcoital morning sunshine.

Egypt: The Scorpion King: Warrior, Legend, King - The Movie
The documentary tends to be pretty serious, as the parade of archaeologists proffer opinions about a stone carving, The Scorpion Tableau shows the first use of the falcon-god symbol of kingship, an image of the god Horus with carved image of a scorpion--The name King Scorpion.
The tableau celebrates a historic battle between King Scorpion and the next strongest king of the region King Naqada--The unification of the kingdom of Upper Egypt.
King Scorpion's burial site is made up of a model of his palace, contains burial goods that include game boards, vases of precious oils and other items--some of the goods come from as far away as ancient Palestine and Afghanistan--that would be elaborated upon in the burial goods of all later kings.

The Scorpion King by John Debney
Portrayed by wrestling superstar Dwayne Johnson (more recognizably, “The Rock”), Mathyus, (more recognizably “The Scorpion King”), is a close cousin to those Robert E. Howard creations, Conan and Kull, each of them with an action-hero physique hailing from some long-lost culture, battling the dark magic forces with wit, heart, and a really big-ass sword.
For the grand finale, the Scorpion King theme is reprised in totality in track 14, a wholly beautiful closure to the album, and one that truly makes the album worthwhile to score fans.

The Scorpion King is the prequel to The Mummy Returns, which was the sequel to The Mummy.
However, The Scorpion King is not really a prequel to The Mummy, since the characters in it were not in the original.
The Scorpion King raises both the violence and the self-deprecation, and the latter brings down the movie.

Filmtracks: The Scorpion King (John Debney)
The Scorpion King: (John Debney) Inspired by the legendary Egyptian warrior introduced in the film The Mummy Returns, the third installment of The Mummy series concentrates on The Scorpion King and his 16th Century battle against an evil visionary and ruler of the famed city of Gomorrah.
The greatest aspect of Debney's score is the fact that he incorporates the electronics --of which the guitars, synth, and drums were often arranged by his own talents-- with the orchestra, highlighted by two harps, without allowing the electronics to ever detract from the main group of players.
The Scorpion King is, at heart, a fully orchestral and choral score that is simply best known for its occasional, awesome accompaniment of attitude, spirit, and power from The Rock's electronic persona.

Yes, the Scorpion King was like an ancient Hitler, bent on overthrowing the world of 3000 BC ("the world" probably meant "the Mediterranean," but still), slaughtering all who stand in his way with his CGI armies, and joining forces with a god of the underworld along the way.
The Scorpion King is like an enormous Rob Tapert production (he of Xena and Hercules fame), a big-budget syndicated series shot in New Zealand set in a make-believe fantasy past where everybody has nice teeth and speaks with modern accents.
The Rock is hired by the tribes to assassinate the sorceress but of course he is taken by her cuteness and her irresistible offers of 3000 anytime minutes, and so he doesn't kill her.

And speaking of future Scorpion King movies, there's a definite I-smell-a-franchise scene halfway through the movie where Mathayus is stabbed with an arrow dipped in scorpion blood.
All this aside, The Scorpion King has its witty moments, and as long as you take the movie for what it is, an hour-and-a-half of good verses evil with a wicked soundtrack mixed in, you'll have a pretty good time.
Michael Clarke Duncan has fun playing his Balthazar as an over-the-top lovable lug, Steven Brand's King Memnon is just corny enough to be feared by people who can't see what an idiot he really is, and Kelly Hu plays her role as the breathy enchantress to the hilt.

Aside from the presence of Mathayus, the "Scorpion King", and the fact that some of the action takes place in the desert, there are no connections between this film and either of the Mummy outings.

A thrilling fantasy adventure filled with action, horror, and dazzling special effects, The Scorpion King is sure to be one of the most exciting blockbusters of the year.
The Scorpion King character, portrayed by wrestling superstar The Rock, was first introduced in The Mummy Returns, a film which is set 2000 years after the events depicted in this new action adventure saga.
One of the fallacies of this movie is that while the Scorpion King was a ruthless villain filled with evil and wrong intent in The Mummy Returns, we see that in his origins he was a good character who was basically a paid assassin.

The Scorpion King - Movie Review
Somehow "The Scorpion King" -- a movie starring a professional wrestler and spun off from a shameful sequel -- has become the most enjoyably, unapologetically jumbo-sized popcorn flick since 1999's remake of "The Mummy," this picture's indirect ascendant.
While "The Scorpion King" aims for a considerably lower brow, it's a vast improvement on its idiotic immediate predecessor.
But like "The Mummy" before it, "The Scorpion King" is often deliberately derivative -- an homage of sorts to all its genre predecessors -- and it's never to be taken seriously.

It is no shock, then, that The Scorpion King is almost as completely ridiculous as the idea to make such a foolish motion picture.
What comes as a surprise, though, is that The Scorpion King has virtually no resemblance or relation to the source material whatsoever.
The target audience of The Scorpion King is clearly that group of wrestling fans that can name every wrestler the Rock has faced and what moves he used, so perhaps an intelligent adventure film is not exactly what director Chuck Russell and company were trying for.

"The Scorpion King," featuring World Wrestling Entertainment superstar the Rock, has the pecs and sufficient charisma to get the job done with a minimal amount of fuss -- but this particular adventure is mainly for the boys.
While the studio prefers to think of it as a spinoff/prequel to its successful "Mummy" franchise, truth be told, Universal's "The Scorpion King," featuring World Wrestling Federation superstar the Rock, more accurately owes a tip of the saber to a certain early Schwarzenegger opus.
The only hitch is that Memnon's resident seer turns out to be a real looker, and, somewhat taken with the beautiful Cassandra (Kelly Hu), Mathayus opts to take her hostage instead of killing her.
