The main thoroughfare extending from the city’s south (alias Conesford) gate northwards was known for centuries as Conesford Street; not until late in the eighteenth century was it called by its present name of King Street.
At a point in King Street just beyond the churchyard of St Peter Southgate, the kerb was realigned to persuade traffic to take the new road to the west, emerging at the upper end of Cattlemarket Street.
Nos 195-197 King Street were of no particular architectural merit, although the latter was notable in having two ranges of weavers’ or “thorough-light” windows to illuminate the attic floor.

 Lawsuit Seeks to Preserve Building on Upper King Street
To complete the project, which includes 5,400 square feet of retail space on the ground floor, underground parking and a 4,600-square-foot courtyard for residents and shoppers, the developer would tear down two rowhouses built in the early 1900s that are also in the 1500 block and gut a building in the 1600 block.
Macdonald said the debate being waged over the upper King Street development is just "the tip of the iceberg" and warned that city planners need to reconsider the rules governing historical preservation before development wipes out more buildings that have no protection.
It essentially authorized the development and revitalization of upper King Street and encouraged shopkeepers and property owners to be creative in their marketing.

A second juvenile left the roof of the King Edward Hotel and landed on the terrace area of #20 Toronto St. A third juvenile, the first fledgling, and the one flying so well, was seen on One Financial Place later it came down to the roof of the building adjacent to the Conrad Black.
Driving by 18 King at 7:10, I saw one of the juveniles was hanging on to the louvers on one of the ledges.

Comment: King Street was a new street, created, in the late eighteenth century, to accommodate (and exploit) the expansion of the town and most of the buildings in it are of a similar date.
Madam Clark's (on the left of the photo) may be of a later date and the building next to it (off the photo to the left) has a commercial or industrial look about it.
So that end of the street may be a bit earlier or a bit later than the rest.

Marx E. Cohen (1808-1881), who commissioned the building of the present house at 85 King Street, was the son of Mordecai Cohen (1763-1848), a Jew who emigrated from Poland and lived in Charleston for about 60 years.
His King Street house was but a short walk from the river, where Cohen could board a small boat and have his slaves row him to the plantation as the tide came in.

In the wake of urban renewal demolitions, excavations by the Smithsonian Institution on the 300 and 400 blocks of King Street were the first archaeological activities (1965- 1973) in Old Town Alexandria.
The ceramic assemblage recovered from these sites was heralded to be the largest collection of Staffordshire wares yet unearthed in the U.S. The many ceramics found on the sites of old taverns were featured in an exhibit at Gadsby’s Tavern Museum in 1993.
A well for the storage of natural ice was uncovered beside the foundation of Gadsby’s at this time, and it can be seen today in its preserved state.
