 King William Street tube station - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was in the City of London, on King William Street, near the present Bank and Monument stations.
King William Street was a short-lived northern terminus on the City and South London Railway (CSLR), a predecessor to the Northern Line on the London Underground.
The southern terminus of the CSLR was Stockwell tube station.

The Northern Line is also home to a host of abandoned stations, including it's original terminus at King William Street (near London Bridge) which closed in 1900 after only ten years service, due to the severer gradients and curves on the approach to the station.
The City and South London railway was the worlds first deep level underground railway, opening in 1890 and running between Stockwell and King William Street, via Kennington and Elephant and Castle.
King William was used as an air raid shelter during the second world war, and presumably, is still in the same condition in which it was left in 1945.

Bank and Monument are interlinked London Underground stations, spanning the length of King William Street in the City of London.
Upholding the requirement of remaining directly under streets (to avoid compensating property owners for vibrations) meant that, by situating it directly under Threadneedle street and Poultry, the platforms had an extreme curve to them, so that going westbound it is not possible to see one end of the platform from the other.
The first station to be known as Bank opened in early 1900 when the City and South London Railway (now part of the Northern Line) opened its extension to Moorgate.

The King William Street station was used as offices by the United Dominions Trust and I was intrigued by the PAX extension number 00.
This comes out into a double track sized tube tunnel which was much larger in diameter than a normal tube station and then a large office and full of desks and filing cabinets, between which we used to put up camp beds.
Now (or at least in 1978, when I did) you could pass through the toilets and into the under-river section (through the construction shaft), streaming water and stalactites, and then through a door in a grille into the Southwark shelter.

Of all the abandoned tube stations on the London Underground Down Street is by far the most interesting in terms of it's history.
I know little about this station other than it was located north of King's Cross - St Pancras, between that station and Caledonian Road.
Both stations were closed in 1939 in part of the streamlining of the Metropolitan line and later the Jubilee line.

If you are on the Central line and wish to transfer to the Circle or District at Bank/Monument station it is quicker to leave Bank, walk down King William Street and enter Monument from the street entrance than it is to go down the approved subterranian walkways.
The tube is a nasty sewer, overpriced overcrowded and unreliable (but the new bit of the Jubilee line is quite nice - go to Canary Wharf station for superb tube architecture)
If you are crossing the road and they barrel through a red light into the pedestrians it is perfectly acceptable to punch them right off their fucking bikes.

You got to the station by driving through an archway (as i recall, it was to the right of the area shown in the photo); the tracks ran through an underpass beneath the road the building shown is on.

Scotland Yard confirmed seven people died in the Liverpool Street explosion, another seven at Edgware Road, a further 13 in the Tavistock Square bus blast and at least 21 at the King's Cross blast.
There are still bodies at the two other Tube bomb sites - at Aldgate station and Edgware Road - but it is thought the King's Cross site is the only one where bodies remain on the train.
Forensic teams working in Tube tunnels and at the other scenes of the blasts are taking swabs to try to determine the type of explosives used.
