  CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Siam (Thailand)
Siam, "the land of the White Elephant" or the country of the Muang Thai (the Free), is situated in the south-eastern corner of Asia, lying between 4° and 21° north lat.
It is bounded on the north by Tong-king and the southern states of Burma, on the east by Annam and Cambodia, on the south by the Gulf of Siam and the Malay Peninsula, and on the west by the Indian Ocean, and thus forms a buffer state between French and British possessions.
Siam, in those days the rendezvous of all commercial enterprise in the East, gave shelter to several hundred Annamite and Japanese Christians who had been expelled or lived there as voluntary exiles on account of persecutions at home.

Anna and the King of Siam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Anna and the King of Siam is a 1944 book by Margaret Landon, a play and a 1946 movie directed by John Cromwell.
Based on the diaries of Anna Leonowens, a British governess in the Royal Court of Siam (now modern Thailand) during the 1860s, the story mainly concerns the culture clash of the Imperialist Victorian values of the British Empire with the autocratic rule of Siam's King Mongkut.
Her letter from the King asking her to come to Siam includes a promise that she will have a house of her own away from the Palace, but the Kralahome says she'll have to stay in the harem for now (although she'll have a private room there).

This was during the reign of the very same King Mongkut who figures in the book by Anna Leonowens, describing her adventures teaching at the court in Siam — which was subsequently became The King and I.
King Mongkut spent 27 years as a monk — which gave him the leisure to study Latin and English, which in turn enabled him to read texts on science, geography, history, mathematics and astronomy — and emerged as a king with a reformist mission.
The clergyman Increase Mather perpetuated the myth of eclipses as signs of God's displeasure; yet his son, Cotton Mather, the notorious witch-hater, was remarkably skeptical about attributing divine disfavor to the simple passage of the moon between the earth and the sun.
