railroad bill - who are we???
Although opinion is divided as to who first used the term 'skiffle', for those of us in the UK it was a particular type of music that emerged in the 1950's, and drew heavily on American Folk Music, Blues and Gospel.
Skiffle sets were first used as fillers between sets for the various trad jazz bands of the time, and grew into a craze that was as big as the rock and roll craze that followed it.
This was a brand new sound in the UK in 1954 and  soon every town had several skiffle bands, using home made and long overlooked instruments - tea chest and wash tub basses, a washboard for rhythm, guitars, banjos, ukulele's, mandolin, kazoo - basically anything that anyone could lay their hands on.

The album is a high-spirited trip down memory lane for anyone who remembers skiffle -- an energetic, do-it-yourself style of music that rendered early American folk, blues and jazz on acoustic guitars and rub-boards.
And Donegan was skiffle's king, thanks to his signature smash, Rock Island Line.
Nevertheless, The Skiffle Sessions is Donegan's most high-profile release since 1978's Puttin' on the Style, which featured such Donegan fans as Elton John, Ringo Starr and Brian May of Queen.

CANOE -- JAM! Music - Artists - Van Morrison Album Review: THE SKIFFLE SESSIONS -- LIVE IN BELFAST 1998
One cannot underestimate the influence that skiffle music and its most famous practitioners, Lonnie Donegan and Chris Barber, had on an entire generation of young folk throughout the U.K. in the late 1950s.
Van Morrison was among those who were inspired by skiffle's repertoire of American folk-blues songs, which were energetically rendered with do-it-yourself determination and required just three chords on an acoustic guitar, whatever percussive device you could bang and perhaps a horn or piano.
The Skiffle Sessions is undoubtedly Donegan and Barber's show.

More straight forward is Kings of Rock 'n' Roll which takes the genre's formative stars and gives you their greatest hits.

Actually, that's not fair — the Norwegian duo Kings of Convenience don't claim to be the future of rock 'n' roll, even if the duo gave its second album the manifestolike title "Quiet Is the New Loud." And Lord knows, the Kings are a heck of a lot better than the '70s schlockmeister Fogelberg.
