sociology - King of South Africa
The King or Queen of South Africa was the nominal ruler of the Union of South Africa during the state's existence as a dominion of the British Empire (and later a realm of the British Commonwealth) from May 31 1910 to May 31 1961 when the country became the Republic of South Africa.
Since the Union of South Africa was a British dominion the British monarch served as South Africa's monarch represented by the Governor-General of the Union of South Africa.
Prior to 1927 the King was considered "King in South Africa" rather than "King of South Africa" as until the passage of the 1927 Royal Style and Titles Act British constitutional law held that there was a single individisble monarchy with the dominions treated as subsets of the United Kingdom.

With the establishment of the League of Nations and cessation of the war, South Africa obtained a Class C Mandate to administer South-West Africa "under the laws of the mandatory (South Africa) as integral portions of its territory".

Ernst & Young SA - 8 Nov 04_Developments in Corporate Governance since King II Report
Most of the recommendations from the Combine Code were echoed in King II, with the exception of the fact that King II specifies a majority of independent non-executives on the board and does not cover the relationships between the chairman, the senior independent directors, the non-executive directors and the major shareholders.
King II specifically requires that companies provide a narrative statement of how the principles set out in the King Code have been applied, the extent of the company’s compliance and reasons for non-compliance.
Although the King II Report helped establish South Africa as a country that considers corporate governance to be a serious concern, the business community needs to continue implementing and improving corporate governance structures in order to keep up with the rest of the international business world.
