"King of the Surf Guitar" (1963): An Alonzo Willis-penned tribute to Dale's prowess, this is a perfect combination of girl-group R&B and Dale's blazing six-string.
For his unofficial theme song, "King of the Surf Guitar," he employed an R&B girl-group which touted his greatness, while he answered with raunchy guitar licks.
These days he's jamming onstage with his 12-year-old son Jimmy (already dubbed "the Prince of Surf Guitar") and playing to kids young enough to be his grandchildren.

 Little Steven's Underground Garage:
Dick Dale, known as the "King of the Surf Guitar," was born Richard Monsour in Boston on May 4, 1937 to Lebanese and Polish parents.
His family moved to Southern California in 1954 where he learned to surf, and with the encouragement of his father, began to develop the guitar style for which he is famous.
A lefthander, he began by playing a right-handed guitar upside down, without restringing it, adding to the unique sound he was creating, and when he finally could afford a lefty guitar, he continued to string it with the bass strings on the bottom.

Dick Dale is known as the "King of the Surf Guitar" because he invented surf music back in the 1950s.
Dale took the guitar and started to beat it to death, and he blew up Leo Fender's amp and blew out the speaker.
A special 85 watt output transformer was made that peaked 100 watts when Dale would pump up the volume of his amp, this transformer would create the sounds along with Dale's style of playing, the kind of sounds that Dale dreamed of.

Dale worked closely with Leo Fender, the manufacturer of the first mass produced, solid body electric guitar and the president of Fender Instruments, to improve the Showman amplifier and to develop the reverberation unit that would give surf music its distinctively fuzzy sound.
Dale followed with "Surfbeat," "Surfing Drums," and "Shake 'n' Stomp," and in 1962 produced the classical surf instrumental, "Miserlou." In early 1963, Capitol Records signed Dale and called him the King of the Surf Guitar.

Dick Dale wasn't nicknamed "King of the Surf Guitar" for nothing: he pretty much invented the style single-handedly, and no matter who copied or expanded upon his blueprint, he remained the fieriest, most technically gifted musician the genre ever produced.
Dale was featured in Life magazine in 1963, which led to appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show and the Frankie/Annette film Beach Party; he also released the follow-up LP King of the Surf Guitar, and went on to issue three more albums on Capitol through 1965.
Surf music became a national fad, with groups like the Beach Boys and Jan & Dean offering a vocal variant to complement the wave of instrumental groups, all of which were indebted in some way to Dale.

Dale's impact was largely limited to Southern California, but his influence was vast, helping ignite surf music and contributing several of the genre's most enduring classics, especially "Let's Go Trippin'" and "Miserlou" (both of which were covered by the Beach Boys on their early albums).
