 Burundi -- History
Burundi?s chronic instability is very largely attributable to the tribal rivalry between the Tutsi who have traditionally dominated the army, the civil service and the higher reaches of the economy, and the pastoral Hutu, who have suffered systematic discrimination to exclude them from any areas of influence.
Burundi narrowly avoided the same fate, but tensions between Tutsi and Hutu were intensified and several outbreaks of violence occurred in the wake of the Rwanda genocide.
Against widespread expectation, the incumbent President Buyoya was peacefully displaced by Melchior Ndadaye, a Hutu banker whose Front for Democracy in Burundi (FRODEBU) took 60% of the popular vote.

 BURUNDI
The uprising was a reaction to the arrest and killing of the former King of Burundi, Ntare V, by the regime that had deposed him in 1966 and established the first republic under Michel Micombero.
While ethnic identity is clearly a very important element of the security problematique in Burundi, to privilege it as the referent object for security is merely to reintroduce all the problems identified with the privileging of the state at another level (Krause and Williams, 1997; Shaw, 1994).
Secondly, to understand Burundi purely in terms of Hutu-Tutsi conflict is effectively to silence other aspects to the conflict: these include the socioeconomic aspects already alluded too, intra-group conflict, and the situation of the Twa.

 Historical flags of Burundi
From 1962, when Burundi achieved independence from Belgium, until 1966 the country flew a similar flag, but in the centre was a drum, called the Karyenda, a traditional emblem of the Mwami (king).
A royal standart from the Burundi king (1962-1966) was published by Mc Meekin in Vexillinfo 109, that was the national flag with the arms in the central circle as in the attached image.
The true source of this flag is very unreliable: If I remember correctly, this flag was redesigned after a newspaper report which said that «in Burundi was hoisted a flag of red, white and green with a Royal drum in it».

On 22 November 1997, the solemnity of Christ King, the Catholic Church of Burundi began the jubilee celebrations to commemorate the first centenary of the country's evangelisation.
To contrast this sad reality, the Bishops urge the construction of the country's future «in peace and harmony, through the various changes that Burundi has experiences and continues to experience», and linking the Christian doctrine to local cultural traditions.
After recalling the beneficial effects of evangelisation in Burundi, such as a better knowledge of God, more fraternal relations among men, priestly vocations, peace and fraternity, the Bishops address the obstacles still faced by the word of God in the country.

In Burundi, drums are sacred and represent, along with the king, the powers of fertility and regeneration.
Their massed drum sound, or the "Burundi beat" as it became known, also caught the ear of Western musicians and they appeared on Joni Mitchell's, The Hissing of Summer Lawns (1975).
The Drummers of Burundi were recorded at Real World Studios in 1993 and released the live album on the Real World Label.
