From 1541 the Kingdom of Ireland was established by the King of England, though this realm did not cover the whole island till the early 17th century.
The GAA is organised on an all-Ireland basis with all 32 counties competing; traditionally, counties first compete within their province, in the provincial championships, and the winners then compete in the All-Ireland senior hurling or football championships.
Ireland's largest religious denomination is Roman Catholicism (about 70%), and most of the rest of the population adhere to one of the various Protestant denominations.

I suspect this [issue of royal arms of Northern Ireland] is one of those issues that has just been fudged because no one wants to face the almost inevitable furore that would follow an official pronouncement of the arms of Northern Ireland, or rather of the Royal Arms for use in Northern Ireland.
The Northern Ireland flag was introduced in 1953 but it is a banner of arms which had been used by the government of Northern Ireland since 1925.
According to the Flaggenbuch (1939), the badge on the defaced Union Flag of the Governor of Northern Ireland was a gold disk with a shield.

I believe it gave me greater confidence as a leader and I hope it gave me perspectives which were usefully deployed in responsibilities given to me later in the Presbyterian Church in Ireland, as its Moderator (1992-93) and as the convener of its Church and Government Committee for seven years.
Those responsibilities have to do with the complex interface between churches and between the church and the world of public affairs and has involved me in work not just with the churches in Ireland but also with the Presbyterian Church USA and the United States Catholic Conference.
This developed yet further when I was subsequently appointed Principal Private Secretary to Northern Ireland’s First Minister and was in regular contact with the Irish Prime Minister and his senior advisers.
