 Kingfishers
The Kingfishers are a fairly large family of distinctive birds scattered around the globe.
This group of kingfishers, perhaps the most primitive of the lot, includes the forest dwelling kookaburras of Australasia, the woodland kingfishers of Africa and Australia, and a wide selection of elusive kingfishers from southeast Asia, the Philippines, and Indonesia.
Although we often think of these type of kingfishers when we think of the family, there are only 9 species of Cerylinae kingfishers and thus they comprise only 10% of the family.

San Diego Zoo's Animal Bytes: Kingfisher
Kingfishers like to keep clean and bathe by diving into water, then perching in the sun to dry and preen their feathers.
Kingfishers that live in forests, grasslands, and deserts have a different diet, dining on a variety of insects, spiders, reptiles, and small mammals, which they catch by spying the prey from a perch and darting out to snap it up.
Kingfishers have a variety of calls used to announce their territory, warn off other birds, and communicate with a mate and their chicks, such as shrieks, screams, clicks, whistles, chuckles, rattles, and chirps.

Hilton Pond This Week June 22-28, 2000 (Belted Kingfisher)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-06)
Kingfishers are interesting birds to watch in nature, and they're even more amazing in the hand.
Although the kingfisher doesn't peck like woodpeckers or tear like small birds of prey, it DOES have the ability to clamp down VERY hard with its long, straight beak--just what you might expect from a bird that has to hold tight to a fish it grabs after diving into the water.
Kingfishers are also unusual in that they burrow several feet into earthen embankments and excavate a nest chamber that is bound to be odoriferous from all the fish adults bring the young.

The trip up river was very quiet, with no kingfishers etc (having all been disturbed by the numerous boats during the day), but the drift downstream from 5-30pm was restful and relaxing, if not initially bird-filled.
Brown-winged Kingfishers were common as ever along the quieter stretches, and we also found a couple of Black-bellied Malkohas, Greater Flamebacks etc. Highlight of the trip however was Mr Dai's hilarity at the antics of KB acting as "the boatman's apprentice" trying to free the outboard from submerged foliage in a narrow mangrove backwater.

After 72 days of banding, we have banded 2907 birds of 59 species at a rate of ~40 birds banded/day (this banding total is 33% above 5-year average for same period!).

After 11 days of banding in July, we banded 358 birds of 36 species, and our average capture/day rate was much higher than the norm (32.5 birds banded/day vs. long term average of 24; for comparison, in 2002 our July average was 28).
