Topic: Kingitanga

  Kingitanga - Encyclopedia.com
Kingitanga A MAORI movement in New Zealand intended to unify the Maori under an hereditary kingship and restrain individual chiefs from selling land.
Independent-minded members of the Kingitanga such as Rewi Maniapoto became involved in the Taranaki war and gave Grey grounds for invading the Waikato in 1863.
In the 20th century, largely under the influence of Te Puea, Tawhiao's niece, the Kingitanga came to terms with government and became a focus for economic and cultural revival.

Leaders to debate succession and Kingitanga's future - 16 Aug 2006 - Maori Queen
The Kingitanga was formed to protect Maori land, customs and governance and to unify Maori.
In the past there have been calls for the Kingitanga to end, and this argument is likely to emerge from some quarters in the coming debates.
Some would say this concluded the remaining role of the Kingitanga, as attempts at self-governance and unity were crushed when the iwi lost the land war.

The Holden Republic: Kingitanga and republicanism   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Kingitanga was never conceived to become such a mainstream movement however, and has kept its focus on Maori affairs, specifically those of its confederated tribes (Iwi).
In many respects Kingitanga was a reaction to the political composition of the unitary Pakeha system of government Maori encountered from the 1830s onwards: a single Queen with sole sovereignty.
The Kingitanga Movement attempted to replicate this within Maoridom, and is in fact therefore a forbearer of arguments that the Treaty is a partnership between (in this case at least) the British monarch and the Maori monarch.

“ My Friend, I will Fight You Forever, Forever”
Kingitanga:          The “King Movement”; an autonomous Maori organisation headed by a Maori monarch.
Not surprisingly, neither monarch was recognised by the Pakeha- instead Kingitanga was interpreted as a rebellion against the Queen.
The result was that no decision was made for Kingitanga as a whole to intervene, but a small contingent of Ngati Maniapoto went to join Kingi- either on their own initiative or to “test the waters”.

Prior to the Kingitanga movement Te Haupōkia had attended the Treaty of Waitangi meetings at Port Waikato and Kawhia along with his father Nui Tone Te Pakaru; ultimately becoming a signatory to the Treaty of Waitangi.

The Kingitanga was not universally welcomed among Māori, though, with many chiefs refusing to put their mana under that of someone else.
It should be noted that the Kingitanga regarded the Queen as complementary to the Māori king, not as a competitor, but the colonial government took a different view.
His stated justification for this action was a belief that the Kingitanga was the fount of Māori resistance to British authority and the fear of an attack on Auckland.

Both the Kingitanga and Tuwharetoa had traditionally been pivotal in such a role, he said.

It was clear by the 1870s that the Kingitanga posed no threat beyond its borders and was in no fit shape to fight a war.

The Maori King movement, known as Kingitanga, was developed and debated nationally in the mid 1840's, with the first Maori King being appointed in 1858 at Ngaruawahia.
The Kingitanga was established to prevent further loss of Maori land to European settlers and posed a direct threat to colonial ambitions.
This is evident within the Kingitanga and its forums, such as Poukai, and the connection Waikato tribes have with the Waikato River, its associated landmarks, historic and religious sites, and traditional food resources.

The story not only includes a rare interview with Te Arikinui, Te Atairangikahu, who succeeded her father, King Koroki, as the leader of the Kingitanga, but it also traces the beginnings of the movement and its history from Te Wherowhero, Tawhiao, Mahuta, Te Rata to Koroki and now his daughter.
One significant element in the story is that the Kingitanga has always had a pan-tribal role, even though there's often the perception that it's really just a Waikato operation.

The growing number of settlers were demanding land, while many Māori, worried that they would be swamped by the rising tide of European colonisation, were very reluctant to give up any more territory.
His governorship was defined by his decision in 1859 to persist in purchasing land at Waitara in Taranaki, despite the opposition of the region's most powerful chief, Wiremu Kingi Te Rangitake.
After defeating the Taranaki "rebels", Grey resolved to invade the Waikato, the seat of the Kingitanga (Māori King Movement).
