Ottawa XPress - Film - Movie details - Kingpin
The basis of this movie is a en ex bowling player who lost his hand finds a bowling prodigy in a amish man and seeks his talents to help him win money.
Personally the best part of this movie is Vanessa Angel and the moments where she teases the screen and wears skimpy things, but personally I'd take the Weird Science TV series over Kingpin.
Kingpin is truly your typical dumb movie and no matter what you will laugh constantly as you watch this film.

Time & Free Press Movie Reviews: "Kingpin"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Woody Harrelson takes the character down the lesser route in "Kingpin," a bowling-tournament yarn that smells pretty stale to be such a fresh arrival.
"Kingpin," written by TV sitcom aces Barry Farano and Mort Nathan, returns Harrelson to the "Look, Ma!" school of acting and drags such superior players as Randy Quaid and Bill Murray along with him.
Harrelson seems to have overcome the gawky self-consciousness that had plagued his big-screen work when he teamed with Oliver Stone, a more demanding director, on "Natural Born Killers." But "Kingpin" finds Harrelson back in the rut and the only one on camera who seems to be wondering how he'll look when the film is projected.

And the crowd I saw the movie with -- the average, teen- dominated Friday night group -- didn't seem to be having a whole lot more fun than I was.
That's when it's not doubling as a shameless advertisement for ESPN (the cable sports network covers the big bowling match at the end, and their logo is everywhere).
The fact that this picture has been given its theatrical release in the midst of the Olympics, when no one is going to the movies, shows how little faith MGM has in its commercial potential.

 IGN: Kingpin Review
Because that was the year that he took a supporting role in the Farrelly Brothers' second movie, Kingpin, touching off what has become a second career for the SNL alumnus as a supporting actor (which has continued in great films like Ed Wood and Rushmore.
Kingpin is the tale of Roy Munson (Woody Harrelson), 1979 Iowa state bowling champion, whose reign at the top of his sport is cut short when he unwisely goes in on a hustle with Ernie McCracken (Murray), which results in the loss of Roy's hand.
Considering that this movie wasn't a huge hit, and that MGM has not really embraced anamorphic until recently (with the Bond movies), I was surprised at the details-- 2.35:1 anamorphic-- and the quality-- excellent-- of this transfer.

If you like good slapstick, you will love this movie and probably find yourself watching it again and again, chuckling at work over whatever bit is tickling you at the moment.
It is a film that came highly recommended to me. But, the movie that arrived only succeeded in under whelming me. Sure, expectations where high.
BILL MURRAY is the exception in his role as a sleazy bowling champ and the film brightens when he is on, but he is not on screen often enough.

The journey from the farm to the finals is where most of the story, along with the absurd humor, is found.
For readers that think I'm taking this movie too seriously, please remember that my column is for parents looking for suitable entertainment for families.
In this regard, Kingpin falls right into the gutter and can't be recommended for even the over 13 crowd.

 INKPOT MOVIE REVIEWS: KINGPIN
According to the publicity material, with this movie the directors "hope to restore good old-fashioned bowling to its rightful place in the mainstream of American consciousness." Hmm.
The movie opens in the Fifties with Roy's Dad dishing out the Reader's Digest/Gumpian wisdom in scoopfuls, shifting to the 70s for a hilarious spoof of Saturday Night Fever.
Yes, indeed, KINGPIN is brought to you by those modern proponents of laxative humour, Peter and Bobby Farrelly, the directors of the aforementioned Jim Carrey vehicle.

The movie is sort of stupid but, unlike other Farrelly films, it fails to make fun of itself.
The problem is that Kingpin looks like it is attempting to be a gross-out comedy but is shy about letting the creative juices roll.
I agree that the movie could have been better on comedy, but I thought the message was powerful.

 Kingpin Movie Review
"Kingpin" tries to cash in on the elements that worked in the Farrelly brothers' first film, "Dumb And Dumber," this time with the generic sports plot (the underdog versus the champion), and it doesn't work because it goes overboard.
Fast forward to the present day as Roy is doing whatever he can to make ends meet, even going so far as to sleep with his absolutely disgusting landlady to avoid rent payment.
Here the tone of the movie is set - we're going to get a lot of poo-poo jokes that are original, but disgusting at the same time.

Murray's funny turn as a conniving champion bowler is the only point in favor of this exceptionally awful comedy, which makes fun of the disabled, bowlers, religion, the elderly and bald people.
"Kingpin's" scanty plot concerns Roy Munson (Woody Har-rel-son), a once-promising bowling prospect whose hand was maimed when the victims of a bowling scam exacted their revenge on him.
She's probably not the only one embarrassed to be in the movie, though — sportscasters Chris Schenkel and Chris Berman, Boston Red Sox pitcher Roger Clemens and cult-folkie Jonathan Richman, as well as some pro bowlers, also put in guest appearances.

On the creative side, I do give the entertainment industry some credit and do admit that the Latino actors in the episodes are of the highest caliber and I am impressed with their quality of performance.
However, being a rational and objective human being, I have to agree with Dr. Flores that the "Kingpin is a reflection of the values of NBC and not of the Hispanic community" because the "vast majority of Hispanics are law abiding, hard working, patriots and their story is rarely portrayed on television".
Frankly speaking, considering all the historical Latino role models that exist and have existed - Kingpin is an unfortunate waste of talent.

I like all Superhero type movies because they show good and evil in a world where we are taught that there is no such thing as good and evil.
Superhero movies show a clearer ethical view of the world - a view in which it is normal and healthy to make judgements about people, and that it is noble to fight wrongs where ever you see them.

But ``Kingpin'' is neither as funny nor as silly as the earlier film.
In this hybrid of a sincere sports movie and a buddy comedy, Harrelson plays Roy, a promising pro bowler whose career is cut short when an angry mob sticks his hand into the automatic ball return.
But ``Kingpin'' has the almost-saving grace of being amusing enough most of the time.
