That same day we visited Kings College Chapel at Cambridge.
The ceiling of Kings College Chapel features some of the most glorious fan vaulting ever created.
Built by Abbot Suger around 1140, it was the burial place of the kings and queens of France for decades.

Born in Sutton Coldfield, Warwickshire in 1939, Jonathan Harvey was a chorister at St Michael's College, Tenbury (1948-52) and later a major music scholar at St John's College, Cambridge.
He was Visiting Professor of Music at the Imperial College, London (a post which was devised in collaboration with Sinfonia 21 with whom he has a long-standing relationship) and is Honorary Professor at Sussex University.

 Lost Abbey Unearthed In Syon Park (from Hounslow Guardian)
Archaeological data unearthed during the search suggests that the structure was of a huge scale - between the size of Kings College Chapel, in Cambridge, and Salisbury Cathedral.
King Henry VIII's coffin was brought to the abbey on its way to Windsor for burial - but it burst open during the night and in the morning dogs were found licking up the remains.
This was regarded at the time as a divine retribution for the King's desecration of the abbey.

And just to make matters worse, the sun is absolutely behind me! But that direct sun makes the buildings stand out against an unusually lowering sky for this part of the world, and I also liked the patterns of the tree shadows on the grass.

The chapel took a long time to build because the Wars of the Roses intervened; building took place through the reigns of Henry VI, Edward IV, Richard III, Henry VII and Henry VIII.
The chapel remained untouched in a half-completed state during the time of Henry VII, leaving his son to fund the final building work.
