The social scene is ok, although this is really the place you want to go just to relax and not be disrupted in the middle of the night by loud drunks, i met a lot of nice people while staying there.
London is so big that you'll never be near everything - so it helps to stay in a hostel two minutes from King's Cross/St. Pancras tube station (even if King's Cross isn't the best area in London, not even close).
I don't really know about the social atmosphere in the hostel as I have friends in London and was never there except to sleep, but there is a lounge downstairs that looks like it could be pleasant with the right people.

We chose this hostel for one night to be close to Kings Cross station the next morning.
We usually stayed at YHA St Pancras when we came down to London for a weekend or so, which is excellent (just like a hotel for the double rooms), however you pay out big there (not much less than a hotel).
