Kingsbridge is a neighborhood in the Bronx, New York.
It is bounded roughly by 240th Street and Van Cortlandt Park on the north, the Jerome Park Reservoir to the east, Kingsbridge Road and Marble Hill to the south, and a large hill on the west demarcating Kingsbridge from the Riverdale neighborhood.
Until the latter part of the 19th century Riverdale, Kingsbridge, and other areas of the northwest Bronx were part of the Town of Yonkers.

In 1874, the western portion of the present Bronx County, consisting of the towns of Kingsbridge, West Farms, and Morrisania, was transferred to New York County, and in 1895 the Town of Westchester and portions of Eastchester and Pelham, were transferred to New York County.
According to a 2003 census estimate, the population of Bronx County was approximately 1,363,198.
The wave of arson in the South Bronx launched the phrase "The Bronx is burning," in 1974, as a title of both a New York Times editorial and a BBC documentary.

As the railroad was extended, the center of population shifted west from the area east of the Bronx River, and the towns of West Farms (1846) and Morrisania (1855) were established.
It was not until 1912, however, that the state legislature established the County of the Bronx as the sixty-second county in the state, effective 1 January 1914.
In 1904 the first subway connecting the Bronx to Manhattan was built under 149th Street, providing cheap rapid transit that with the 3rd Avenue elevated line persuaded hundreds of thousands during the first third of the twentieth century to leave tenements in Manhattan for spacious new apartments in the Bronx.
