		On the shore of beautiful Nepean Bay, Kingscote is the island's capital, and its centre of commerce and tourism.
		Kingscote has a small colony of penguins that were transported from Penneshaw during the building of the boardwalk there; not as impressive as Penneshaw’s, they’re best seen on the guided ranger talks that leave from the foyer of the Ozone Hotel (Oct—March 8.30pm and 9.30pm; rest of the year 7pm and 8pm; $5).

		Its appearance in Newport marked the beginning of the "cottage boom" that would distinguish the town as a veritable laboratory for the design of picturesque houses throughout the 19th century.
		At the outbreak of the Civil War, the Jones family left Newport never to return, and the house was sold in 1864 to China Trade merchant William Henry King.

		This is the current northern terminus of the Bluebell Railway, which has been lovingly and carefully restored since we purchased it in January 1985.
		The station has been restored to its 1950s condition by "The Friends of Kingscote", a volunteer group within the Society, who now maintain the station.

		The Ozone Hotel, with its mermaid statue is a well known landmark in Kingscote and is located on the corner of Drew Street (see photo above) and Chapman Terrace which runs along the foreshore.
		This is the view from the foreshore near the Ozone Hotel back towards the ferry jetty.
		The high speed ferry which operates from Kingscote to Adelaide can be seen moored alongside the jetty.

	KANGAROO ISLAND SHIPWRECKS
		When off Kangaroo Island she apparently struck an unidentified object, and began to settle in the bow as she headed back towards Port Adelaide for repairs; it soon became obvious she would not reach port so was beached a short distance to the west of Cape Torrens, north-west end of Kangaroo Island, 20 March 1935.
		The manganese bronze prop was recovered in 1967.
		It appears that one of the leading lughts on shore at Kingscote had gone out, and the captain mistook a light from the Ozone Hotel, thus steering an incorrect course.
