 Norfolk Island - The Second Settlement
During Norfolk Island's second settlement (between 1825 and 1855) it was indeed the Hell of the Pacific; a place dominated by death and despair.
Conditions in the gaol were appalling; a large percentage of the convicts were sentenced to remain in heavy chains for the terms of their natural lives; most convicts were chained during the day.
Stone was quarried from Nepean Island, a rock close to shore, and coral rubble was rendered with lime and sand; thus most walls were formed, while Norfolk Pine was used for joinery and roofs.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) launched an investigation this afternoon following the discovery of the body of a 60-year-old Norfolk Island man. Ivens Buffett, Norfolk Island's Minister for Land and Environment, was found dead in his office around midday.
A man arrested by AFP officers on Norfolk Island this afternoon was charged tonight with murder under Section 19 of the Norfolk Island Crimes Act.
