Kingsville, with a population of 25,000, is home to the headquarters of the famed King Ranch and Naval Air Station Kingsville.

Texas AandM University–Kingsville was originally projected in 1913 as a state teacher training school to be located in South Texas.
In 1923 the Texas legislature changed all normal schools to state teachers' colleges and authorized a new school to be located west of the 101st meridian and south of the twenty-ninth parallel.
In 1993 Texas AandI's name was changed to Texas AandM University–Kingsville, and the institution was one of a number of South Texas state universities that would receive additional funding under the South Texas Initiative passed by the Texas legislature.

Kingsville grew slowly during the 1930s; by 1939 the population was 7,200.

In 2004, the NWRC received congressionally-appropriated funding for the specific purpose of establishing a field station at Texas AandM University—Kingsville (TAMUK), an institution that is dedicated to serving an ethnically and culturally diverse population.
The congressional directive indicated that the primary focus of field station activities would be the development of methods to manage and ultimately eradicate pseudorabies (found in feral hogs) and other wildlife diseases affecting livestock.

Enrique Perez, Texas Cooperative Extension county agent for agriculture in Cameron County, noted that almost a week after the rains, many agricultural fields there remain under water.
Marvin Miller, plant pathologist at the Texas AandM agriculture center in Weslaco, said rains last October delayed fall planting of spring onions, reducing acreage 50 percent from the year before.
Texas AandM cotton IPM entomologist John Norman said improved soil conditions from the rains bode well for next year's cotton crop, though boll weevils could get an edge from delayed stalk destruction efforts in soggy fields.

KINGSVILLE, Texas (NNS) -- Naval Air Station Kingsville, Texas, is preparing for the arrival of Hurricane Rita, the Gulf of Mexico's third hurricane this season.
The air station closed its gate at noon Sept. 22 for all but essential personnel, and the base’s Commanding Officer, Capt. James A. Crabbe, expects most personnel to be able to return by the morning of Sept. 27 to resume a normal work schedule.
Although Hurricane Rita is expected to strike the Texas coast, damage to Kingsville is expected to be minimal due to the more northerly tracking of the storm.
