  Kingsway Underpass
The Kingsway Underpass is a cut and cover tunnel in London that was built for trams, and runs from Southampton Row in Holborn, passes under the whole length of Kingsway, and emerges under Waterloo Bridge[?].
In the 1970s most of the tunnel was converted to the Strand Underpass, for use by road traffic.
Not to be confused with the Kingsway Tunnel in Liverpool.

246-R-1995 -- Reconstruction of Mary Hill By-Pass (CP) - Ministry of Transportation and Highways of the Province of ...
The applicant accepts to pay the construction costs for the railway detouring, the underpass construction and the roadway approaches, with the exception of the 15 percent contribution from CP for the cost shareable portion of the project.
CP opposes the application on the grounds that since Mary Hill By-Pass is essentially a new route and the existing structure is more than adequate for traffic on the existing route and on the railway, CP should not be required to contribute towards the cost of the new structure.
With respect to the existing Kingsway Avenue subway, the Agency is of the opinion that the main purpose of carrying out the reconstruction component of the proposed subway is to provide for today's lateral and vertical clearances for the highway.

 Underground History - Kingsway Underpass
The subway was closed briefly in the early '30s so that the original arched roofs could be removed and the roadway dropped to accommodate double-decker trams and was re-opened in 1931 by the King.
The tram underpass originally ran from the Holborn entrance, though a subterranean station at Holborn and then down the length of the Kingsway, passing through another station at Aldwych before finally emerging to the surface immediately under Waterloo Bridge.
During this conversion the Aldwych station was lost, however the stretch north of the new ramp to the old exit just north of Holborn remains intact and undisturbed, with the subterranean Holborn station still there today almost as it was the day it closed, just beyond the shut tunnel gates.

This is to allow an improved connection, where none presently exists, from the Lake Shore Trail, the riverside promenade adjacent to the Palace Pier and Palace Place Condominiums and the Humber River Pedestrian/Bicycle Bridge to the Tommy Thomson Trail, along the west-side of the Humber River.
This important railway underpass link has never fallen within the mandate and funding of the Humber Bridges Project and we anticipate that the cost of such a structure may be relatively high compared to the costs of the pathways themselves.
On the east side of the river there is no need for a new underpass of the railway embankment since the pathway will turn to the east after passing under the road bridges to join the trail along the existing South Kingsway underpass of the railway.

The Kingsway tram subway was opened in 1908 to link the services of North London which passed down Theobalds Road at Holborn to those of South London which passed over Westminster Bridge and onto the new Victoria Embankment.
The trams picked up their electricity supply through a conduit laid between the running rails, which was the common practice within Central London.
