Culture and Environment Culture and Environment: A Case Study of Vietnam's North Upland Region   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
This is a comparative study between Tai and Kinh people in two upland villages in northern Vietnam. The study explores how the differences of Tai and Kinh people traditional farming systems, of their perceptions of land and land use have influences on their gardening.
It is found that while all Kinh people in the village have intensive vegetable crops for cash, Tai people in the other village remain their garden uncultivated.
Kinh people use many pesticide and fertilizers for their garden crops, and their practices have impacts on their environment, espcially when the use of manure on garden's crops reduces the amount of manure used in their main crop-wet rice crop in the field, and increases the use of chemical fertilizer and pesticide.
