Golspie High School Board has fallen by the wayside after no nominations were received in recent elections for three new parent members.
School boards were set up under the School Boards (Scotland) Act 1988 in order to promote contact and the exchange of information between the school, parents and the wider community.
The Bill also requires new detailed annual reports for parents on school performance and headteachers' ambitions for schools School board chiefs have questioned the bill's strength, while the Tories have called the move a "sham" and the SNP claim there are more important educational issues.

Much is already being done to raise awareness of healthy eating but it may be necessary to go one step further and ban the junk food ads targeted at children and teenagers and introduce through the education curriculum classes informing pupils of the benefits of a healthier diet and lifestyle choices.
In the cities routes to schools that minimised encounters with traffic would need to be devised in order for parents to feel safe about allowing their children to walk to school.
They are also at a greater risk of developing cancer, high blood pressure and suffering from a heart attack or stroke later on in life.

At the end of the day the points were totalled and in a very close finish Dornoch Academy came second by half a point to Farr High School.
Our team is to be congratulated on representing the school well both by their achievement and their behaviour and positive attitude on the day.

It was in response to this misconception that a three year project was initiated to place a craft maker-in-residence for a term in a school in all eight areas of the Highlands.
The work produced by the makers during their residency, along with pieces by other invited makers, and designs by pupils, is currently on tour in the exhibition ‘Over the Hills and Far Away…’, a name chosen to reflect the way many people perceive the Highlands of Scotland.
Jeweller Gilly Langton was selected for the Skye and Lochalsh residency and is based at Plockton high school.

In September 2003, the combined school roll in Caithness and Sutherland was 2,629, a slight 1% increase on the previous year's roll.
As can be seen from Figure 33 this masks differing trends within the different school catchment areas, with increasing rolls in Thurso High School and Dornoch Academy.
Attainment tends to be particularly high in schools where the roll has been increasing.

 Craft Makers Come To The Highlands
The 3-year project aims to place a craft maker-in-residence for a term in a school in all eight areas of the Highlands, culminating in a major touring craft exhibition in 2007, the Year that Scotland celebrates Highland culture.
She is enjoying exploring the Highlands for inspiration for her designsand is also busy researching and developing new ways of working with the pupils at the High School and satellite primary schools.
A Showcase exhibition is at present in Plockton High School and shows work by Gilly, Anna Lewis and Maike Barteldres.

Terry Pierce, the headteacher of Maxwelltown High in Dumfries, which has run the pilot scheme, said staff were "very enthusiastic" and predicted the course would spread throughout Scotland.
Maureen Smith, a PE teacher at Maxwelltown High who took part in the course, said she had stood on tables occasionally, acted the part of a drunk falling over to explain factors in imbalance and used quiz show-type buzzers to engage children in the lesson.

 BBC - Action Network - The Circus came to 5 Northern Towns (4 in Sutherland and 1 Caithness)!
Roxana Meechan, Arts Development Officer for Sutherland is the Lead Officer for this Project and organised a total of four Intensive Weeks of Circus Skills and Comedy training opportunities in Sutherland during the October holidays in Golspie, Dornoch, Bettyhill and Kinlochbervie.
There were Workshops in the morning (10 am to 12 pm), afternoon (1 to 4 pm) and evening (6.30 to 8.30 pm).
Numbers were lower than expected during morning and afternoon workshops and unfortunately hardly any participants turned up to the evening workshops in Kinlochbervie and Bettyhill (Sutherland) with very low numbers in Dornoch in the evening and also no evening participants in Wick (Caithness).

 Fishupdate.com: Fishing Crisis Raises School Fears
A SENIOR councillor has warned that one of the far-reaching consequences of the current fishing crisis could be the closure of one of the newest secondary schools in the Highlands.
Councillor Francis Keith warned that the serious downturn in the fishing industry will affect jobs in the north-west Sutherland ports of Kinlochbervie and Lochinver and the pupil roll in Kinlochbervie High School, opened by Prince Charles in 1995, will be badly hit.
The Council’s land and environment committee meeting also heard pleas from representatives of the fishing industry to safeguard the shellfish sector from boats transferring from the North Sea whitefish sector into fishing for prawns on the west coast.

Descendants of emigrants who left North West Scotland for America long before the Clearances are behind a plan to buy and renovate a historic mansion as a clan centre.
The idea of converting A listed Balnakeil House at Durness for use as a hi-tech heritage centre and meeting place for Mackays and other North Highland clansfolk has come from pupils of McIntosh High School in Darien, Georgia, which has established links with Kinlochbervie High School.
It has been taken up enthusiastically by adults in Darien and North West Sutherland, where the project was discussed further at a recent public meeting in Durness.
