  Stringed Instruments - The Kinnor
Authorities are divided as to whether the kinnor was a harp or a lyre.
But natural as was the hypothesis that the kinnor was a simple harp, to those who specially directed their attention to the instruments of the early European nations, further knowledge of Egyptian and Assyrian antiquities led to the suggestion (by Pfeiffer, Winer, and other authors) that the kinnor was, after all, a sort of guitar.
The sons of Jeduthun are mentioned as prophesying with a kinnor.

The translation of "kinnor" by κιΘάρα presupposes a similarity between the Hebrew and the Greek instruments, a supposition that is confirmed by the illustrations of the kinnor found on Jewish coins (see illustration), which is very similar to both the Greek lyre and cithara.
On the other hand, the Hebrew cithara, the kinnor, is not found in its original form, but in the modified form it assumed under Greek influence.
In the old Egyptian illustration there are eight strings; the later Egyptian cithara has from three to nine strings; the instruments on the coins have from three to six strings; and Josephus says that the cithara had ten and the nebel twelve strings.

The strings comprised the kinnor, or nebhel or nebhel; the winds: the shophar, or qeren, chatsotserah, chalil, and 'ughabh; percussion: toph, metsiltayim, tsltselim, mena'an'im, shalishim.
In Psalms 81:2, the kinnor is called "pleasant," and Isaiah 24:8 speaks of the "joy" of the kinnor.
Only once (Isaiah 16:11) is the kinnor associated with mourning, and Cheyne infers from this passage "the kinnor was used at mourning ceremonies." But the inference is doubtful; the prophet is merely drawing a comparison between the trembling of the strings of the lyre and the agitation in his own bosom.

The identification of the instrument has been much discussed, but, from the standpoint of the history of musical instruments, the weight of evidence is in favor of the view that the Semitic kinnor is the Greek cithara (q.v.).
This instrument was already in use before 2000 s.c.
It is unlikely that an instrument (which also appears on Hebrew coins) so widely known and used in various parts of Asia Minor in remote times, and occuring among the Hittite sculptures, should pass unmentioned in the Bible, with the exception of the verses in Dan.

Josephus undoubtedly says (Ant., VII, xii) that the kinnura was played with a plectrum, and in 1 Sam 16:23 David plays the kinnor "with his hand." But even if this excludes the use of the plectrum in the particular case, it need not be held to disprove the identity of kinnor and kinnura.

Earlier, it could equally denote the lyre, suggesting a process of transference from lyre to lute, the lute gradually acquiring the attributes of previous string instruments and becoming a sublimation of them.
This transference is noticeable in the earliest Arabic versions of the Bible, where kinnor (lyre) is translated as 'ud (lute).
The transfer of terms for lyre and lute appears more subtly in the myth of the invention of the 'ud which has been handed down in two variants from the 9th and 10th centuries, the first being Iraqi and the second Iranian.

THIS instrument will naturally present itself for our consideration after the kinnor, not only because it seems from all accounts to have been an instrument of a more elaborated character, and consequently of greater capabilities than the kinnor, both as to tone and pitch, but also because it appears in the Bible chronologically later.

Singing was marked by responsorial, antiphonal, and refrain forms, and singing and dancing were accompanied by instruments.
The first instruments mentioned in the Bible are the kinnor, evidently a lyre similar to the kithara, and the ugab, possibly a vertical flute.
Other instruments, more of ceremonial than of musical value, included the hasosra, a trumpet, and the shofar, a ram's or goat's horn, the least musical of all and the only one still in use.
