Kino is a simple to use video editor.
Kino is a free, open source video editing programme that lets you capture video through firewire then add titles, transitions and video effects to the footage.
Kino is designed to capture video through an IEEE1394 connection, also known as a Firewire or iLink conection.

 Kino: Video Editing for Linux
Kino is a unique program that provides easy to use features while maintaining a small enough learning curve that even the new video producer can wrap their minds around.
Now, when capturing video, be aware of the fact that Kino can be setup to drop video frames, if needed.
On the video front, you will be happy to find some basic video transitions and filters, too.

 Kino 1.0.0 Review - Kino 1.0.0 Download
Kino can easily be used by both beginner, as well as professional users in their line of work.
Kino has reached version 1.0 a couple of days ago, so you won't be able to install this version using your distribution's package manager just yet, so to get this version, either wait for an update in the repositories, or download and compile the source package.
Kino, with additional programs, provides a DV file that stores the movie in a new file format, which can be used further for compression and exporting without the Kino interface.

The video should start playing, and its output should be displayed in the main Kino window as well as on the camcorder screen.
A simple scene is described by a command that points to the first and the last frames of the clip file that will be used in the movie; a complex scene is a set of simple scenes.
Kino still is under development and may crash sporadically when you are using Edit or Trim, so make sure you save your movie project regularly.

Linux.com | How to create video titles and graphics with Kino
Kino is one of the better free software video editors for Linux, but it isn't always intuitive.
A typical fullscreen (as opposed to widescreen) video in Kino is 720x480; if you wanted to insert a title bar at the bottom of such a video, you'd want to have something that's wide enough, but not too tall.
Kino assumes your graphics are in square pixels since that is what most graphics tools are geared toward.

Linux Digital Video - Kino Preferences
Kino generates a sequence number and optionally a timestamp that it appends to the stem file name.
However, if you are only capturing for Kino use or for another program that supports DV1, then choose it because DV natively interleaves audio with the video and the audio stream in DV2 is wasteful.
When enabled, Kino uses sophisticated algorithms and threads to sacrifice the video frame rate in order to provide better audio quality of play back and to provide an overall playback rate that is consistent and true with time.

Kino also features incredible support for IEEE-1394, otherwise known as FireWire, which allows it to communicate with different video hardware, and also supports most USB drive input.
Kino has easy tools for filters, general effects, and video transition, ranging from kaleidescope to a general background generator.
I have used Kino for a video project, and it is great for importing DV via firewire.

NewsForge | Kino makes video editing simple
Kino's excellent "dvgrab" interface, the tool that allows you to capture digital video to the disk, makes it ideal for importing digital media, even if you're doing the majority of your editing with another digital video editor.
Kino does not support multiple layers or tracks of audio and video, which means that it's not suitable for video work that requires complex audio and video effects.
For those using a video camera to record their work, be aware that you will be able to connect via FireWire only if you're using a digital video camcorder.
