  Mud and Musk Turtles
Some of the larger species in the family Kinosternidae are capable of delivering a strong bite, and should be handled with care.
In particular, the two species of Staurotypus are known for their tendency to bite, in addition to a rather fierce temper that does not diminish with length of time in captivity.
Ticks are not often encountered, given the aquatic lifestyle of most of the species in the Kinosternidae family, but occasionally leeches are found on freshly-caught individuals (see, for example, Ernst, 1986).

Turtles of the World > Species: Family Kinosternidae (American mud and musk turtles)
Kinosternidae is a New World family of small to medium-sized semi-aquatic mud or musk turtles ranging from Canada to South America.
Hutchison and Bramble (1981) analyzed the scutes of fossil and living specimens of the Kinosternidae and related Dermatemydidae, and compared these scutes to those of testudinoid turtles.
They found that the gular scute of kinosternids is really a new scale of different origin, which they term an intergular.

ETI - Turtles of the World: Turtle anatomy
Outside the pleurals and extending along each side from the cervical are 12 marginal scutes (11 in Kinosternidae).
Anteriorly there is a pair of gular scutes (except that in the family Kinosternidae a single gular is usual); in some families an intergular is also present.
Paired humerals, pectorals, abdominals, femorals, and anals follow, respectively, and in the Cheloniidae an interanal is sometimes present.

Kinosternidae - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kinosternidae is a family of mostly small turtles that includes the mud and musk turtles.
The family Kinosternidae contains 25 species within 4 genera, but taxonomic reclassification is an ongoing process so many sources vary on the exact numbers of species and subspecies.
They inhabit slow-moving bodies of water, often with soft, muddy bottoms and abundant vegetation.

Turtle Molecular Phylogeny   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
The close relationship of mud turtles (Kinosternidae) and the monotypic family Dermatemydidae, as the Kinosternoidae, is supported as is the close relationships between softshells (Trionychidae) and the Fly River or Pignosed Turtle (Carettochelyidae) as the Trionychoidae.
On major conflict between the molecular evidence and previous morphological studies is the purported monophyly of the large superfamily Trionychoidea (Trionychidae, Carettochelyidae, Kinosternidae and Dermatemydidae).
Bootstrap analysis of the morphological data set demonstrates moderate support based on morphological characters, but it is not supported by the molecular data.
