As delicate as the shimmering wings of a dragonfly, Kinshu -- an epistolary novel by one of Japan's most popular literary authors -- is a masterpiece of simplicity and beauty.
Life, death, karma--these interwoven themes form the heart of this lyrical novel in letters, Kinshu: Autumn Brocade, the first work to be published in the U.S. by Teru Miyamoto, one of Japan's most popular literary writers.
The word kinshu has many connotations in Japanese--brocade, poetic writing, the brilliance of autumn leaves--and resonates here as a vibrant metaphor for the complex, intimate relationship between Aki and Yasuaki.

Teru Miyamoto : Kinshu: Autumn Brocade : Book Review
Each has made a new life, Aki as the wife of a college professor and mother of a handicapped son, and Yasuaki as a man who has failed in a series of business ventures.
The word "kinshu" combines the meanings of the Japanese words for "embroidery" and "brocade," which, according to the translator, Roger K. Thomas, have been traditionally associated with autumn in Japanese literature.
The brocade imagery repeats, as does autumn, the season in which Aki and Yasuaki meet on the mountain.

Kakita Kinshu stood on the balcony of his rooms in Kyuden Kakita, staring out over the lands of his people, hands balled into fists and resting plaintively on the wood railing.
Kinshu fought not to mince; they were hardly in a public place, but he felt that his balcony was likely not the best place for such a display.
Kinshu turned fully, and crossed his arms, leaning on the railing of the balcony.

 Marriage dissected in letters
"Kinshu," Teru Miyamoto's first novel translated into English, is about a man and a woman who utterly fail in their obligations to each other.
Hesitancy pervades "Kinshu" like a soft stutter as Aki and Yasuaki try to separate what felt good and right from the agonized memory that defines their shared history.
Originally published in 1982, "Kinshu" is finally available to the English-speaking world.

 Kinshu - Miyamoto Teru
Kinshu is an epistolary novel, an exchange of letters over the course of close to a year between a woman and a man who had divorced ten years earlier, when they were still in their mid-twenties.
They meet again by chance on a gondola at a mountain resort, but barely speak -- but the woman, Katsunuma Aki, feels compelled to get in touch with her former husband, and begins this correspondence.
Kinshu is an appealing and affecting novella, cleverly conceived and written.

Gumpo Azalea - Plant of the Week
The Japanese have been growing azaleas for centuries and have traditionally classified azaleas into two groups, the Tsutsuji and the Satsuki.
This classification system was codified in 1692 in their first book on azaleas, Kinshu Makura.
The Tsutsuji azaleas bloom one lunar cycle after the spring equinox and comprise the most popular azaleas in the U.S.; the Satsuki bloom two lunar cycles after the vernal equinox.

Both have made new lives, Aki as a wife and mother of a handicapped son, and Yasuaki as a man who has failed in a series of business ventures.
The Japanese word "kinshu" incorporates the word "brocade," a repeating image, as is autumn.
Aki comments early in the novel that the music of Mozart signifies that "Perhaps living and dying are the same thing." The repeating images of Mozart's music, and karma, a Buddhist concept, in the reconciliation of life and death, add depth and universality.

Teru Miyamoto, however, does not simply hew to our idea of Japanese art.
His characters in "Kinshu" struggle just as much with modernity and its jarring interconnections and disconnections as any character offered by 20th century European literature.
Though the characters do express their emotions covertly -- we are well aware that these are not frank, effusive Americans -- they are less willing to accede to the inevitability of silence or to acquiesce in the carefully balanced tranquility most familiar to us in Japanese fine art.
