Mortal Kombat Encyclopedia Article @ Vanquishing.net   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Mortal Kombat 4 brought the series into 3D, replacing the digitalized fighters of the previous games with polygon models, while Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance was the first in the series to skip arcades altogether and go directly to consoles, a symptom of U.S. arcade market's dramatic decline.
Although many of the more popular characters were spawned from these palette swaps, the sheer over-saturation of the roster with them, as well as the fighting game genre's gradual demand for unique looks for all their characters, lead to many fans growing sick of the re-colors, and joking about their overuse in the series.
The Mortal Kombat tournament was originally thought to be a solely human conception, until later retcons revealed it to be universal among the series' featured Realms, created by the Elder Gods as a way for other realms to defend themselves against Outworld after it grew too powerful.

Kintaro (Mortal Kombat) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Mortal Kombat: Armageddon's Konquest mode, Kintaro is seen in the Netherealm along with Sheeva, Havik, and a legion of demons all apparently working in an attempt to overthrow Shinnok's rule at his spire.
Kintaro's appearance since Mortal Kombat II has shifted from simply looking like a tiger (stripes instead of spots like Goro sports) to being an actual tiger Shokan; he is distinguished from other Shokan by having true feline features (actual fur, digitigrade feet, fangs and a distinctly feline nose).
Kintaro made a very brief appearance in the Konquest mode of Mortal Kombat: Deception (where he can be seen very briefly in the forest behind a treasure chest upon leaving the village) as well as in the Krypt, where he can be seen as one of the characters running among the Koffins.

Mortal Kombat Trilogy on the PlayStation is the best of the bunch (having come out on the Sega Saturn and Nintendo 64 systems as well).
However you see it, Mortal Kombat Trilogy is a huge game that will take you months to complete with every character/difficulty, and lets not even comment on finding out every secret, finishing move, Kombat Kode, or anything else this massive game has in store for you to fiddle with.
Mortal Kombat 4 was only a decent first attempt in the 3D MK realm, but it has pulled many MK-dislikers back in the rave, not a bad sign of what's to come though, if you ask me.

Making his first chronological appearance in Mortal Kombat II, Blaze was visible only as a burning figure in the Pit II background fighting a character fans have since named Hornbuckle.
This was later retconned, with Hornbuckle being a mystic priest of a Dragon King worshipping cult "ambushing" Blaze and performing incantations to explain the awkward stillness of the characters.

Sheeva, Kintaro, Shao Kahn, Sub-Zero, Stryker, and my second favourite character of all time, Sektor (the first being Sub-Zero), were all in playable form and located amongst a dozen others on the select screen, which in the final version will have two complete panels to accommodate the number of selectable fighters.
Most of the characters were instantly recognizable, such as Sub-Zero who donned his classic blue ninja outfit, while others, such as Stryker, were unrecognizable at first thanks to their new modern looks.
