This park is a relatively new one which was opened to the public in 1989 and the largest park in Tokyo 23 wards area.
This park is situated in approximately the center of the Akirudai plateau that stretches between a branch of the Tamagawa river, the Akikawa river and the Hiraigawa river.
This park is located on the south side of the confluence of the Tamagawa river and the Akikawa river, and is a part of the Tokyo Metropolitan Takiyama Natural Park.

About 10 minutes' walk due west from the main entrance of the park (nearest the subway station), there is a large playground with lots of slides and swings, some of them nestled in and among the groves of trees (which almost makes you forget you're smack-dab in the middle of a metropolitan area).
This park is better for bigger kids who can actually walk long distances (lots of paths, paved and otherwise and lots and lots of trees and shade) picnic/outdoor worship areas (well, that's what we use it for!), athletic courses, etc. though little kids will enjoy the water area.
This is a huge park with several playgrounds, an aviation museum, rollerblading and skateboarding areas, grassy hills to roll on, flower beds in all seasons, etc. Aviation Museum includes IMAX Theatre, open from 10:00 a.m.

Only thing is taht even though it has a large parking space, the access road through the mountains is long, narrow and single, so if you go on nay holiday, it can be quite painful to reach it, although once you are parked, it is nice.
All the parks are in eastern Tokyo, except for Mizumoto park which is at the northeastern edge of Tokyo.
Inokashira park is nice, has a childrens zoo, Ghibli Museum (from the popular movies - Spirited Away etc), a creek for the kids to play in, a big lake with row boats and paddle boats to hire and usually has lots of buskers and magicians wandering around.

A younger crowd can be found in Komazawa Olympic Park, where the rice wine flows all night and the regular joggers have to give up their circuit for a few weeks during spring.
The night views are great with many lanterns lining the river and the parties are plentiful, although it is not much of a place to lay out a blanket as most of the area is paved and quite urban.
