Native Birds Of Hawai`i - Kioea   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
The Kioea was a member of the Hawaiian honey-eater family, but little is known about it, as its members were in decline even before European contact.
The Kioea was a large bird, about 13 inches long, with the typical long, slightly curved bill of the honeyeater family.
Though all specimens of the Kioea came from the island of Hawai`i, fossil records show that the bird was found on other islands as well.

 Kioea at AllExperts
The kioea (chaetoptila angustipluma) was a member of the Hawaiian honey-eater family that became extinct around 1859.
The feathers of the kioea were not used in Hawaiian featherwork, nor is it mentioned in any chants or legends.
What distinguished the kioea from other honeyeaters was the broad fl stripe on its face and bristle-like feathers on the head and breast.

 Kioea - Chaetoptila angustipluma
The "kioea" of this database entry is a large brown honeycreeper that was one of the first endemic forest birds to become extinct on the island of Hawai'i after western contact.
However, in Hawai'i names are descriptive, and tend to be recycled many times over, so there is more than one "kioea" species.
I have seen at least two sources which use "kioea" as the Hawaiian name of the bristle-thighed curlew.

Albatrosses are nesting in places like Kahuku and Ka‘ena Point on O‘ahu and Kīlauea Lighthouse on Kaua‘i before the adults leave in late spring, followed by their chicks in early summer.
At the most secluded of our wetlands, the bristle-thighed curlew, the kioea, a large and rare transient, arrives from the Alaskan tundra for winter in Hawai‘i.
One year, in a rare sighting in West Hawai‘i, I saw a curlew lunge for a crab on the reef, capture it with its long, curved beak and dash it against the rocks for the kill.

Miyao said there was little opposition to the project during the last three years as it underwent a planning and environmental review process.
In fact, he said, many residents liked the idea that the clearing of the half-acre site would open up Lokoaka, Akepa and Kioea streets.
Miyao pointed out that the "rain forest" actually was a former home site claimed by the 1946 tsunami, and he denied assertions that the parcel might be owned by the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands.

Notably rare are the nectar eating honeycreepers such as Iiwi, Apapane, and Amakihi that dominate the native forests today.
Instead, the fossils show an abundance of birds that currently are exceedingly scarce or extinct like the Kioea, which is found commonly in the lava tube fossils of Kona.
Another cave find was the herbivorous, giant, flightless goose, the Moa Nalo, found in Umii Manu, or bird trap.

Birds of NA no. 535 - extinct Hawaiian honeyeaters
While I haven't had a chance to review most of them more than superficially, I immediately turned to no 535 (32 pages), which covers the known Hawaiian honeyeaters, all of which probably are extinct.
They consist of the four species in Moho still around when Europeans arrived - the Kauai, Hawaii, Oahu & Bishop's O-o, and the one Chaetoptilla, native name Kioea.
This report, by Paul Sykes, Angela & Cameron Kepler, & J. Michael Scott, draws together a great deal of published information probably previously unknown except to experts on Hawaiian birds, and adds heretofore unpublished data compiled by the late John Sincock, who studied the last Kauai O-o's in the early 1970s.
