Five children and the bus driver died on the lonely plains of Kiowa County in that blizzard, and the event was broadcast via newspapers and radio across the nation.
The father of the county, C. Frost Liggett, who platted Chivington, the first big "city" in the county, established most of the county newspapers, including the still surviving Kiowa County Press, and was land agent and a politician in the county for years.

 Contract Awarded To Rehabilitate Commercial Road In Kiowa County
OKLAHOMA CITY -- A state contract will be used to underwrite repaving an important and historical road in Kiowa County, Rep. Jack Bonny and Sen. Gilmer Capps announced.
One segment involves resurfacing the county road from S.H. 54 west for five and one-half miles.
The project is expected to start in early fall after the wheat harvest, according to Kiowa County Commissioners Robert Boelte and Wayne Barker.

Kiowa County was organized in 1901 following the opening of the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache, Caddo-Wichita reservations to non-Indian settlement.
Named after the Kiowa Indians that occupied the area in the pre-settlement years, Kiowa County was once the ideal crossing for cattle herded up the Great Western Cattle Trail from Texas to the shipping yards in Kansas, witnessing as much cattle movement as the famous Chisholm Trail to the east.
