Born Kip Winger III, in Denver, Colorado, on 21 June 1961.

Kip Winger - Music Downloads - Online
Bio: As the lead singer and bassist of the band bearing his last name, Kip Winger rode the '80s pop-metal explosion to short-lived stardom, before beginning a solo career in the late '90s.
Winger returned to New York in 1982, and through his contact with producer Beau Hill (another Denver native), he began landing songwriting work.
Tragically, just after Winger had finished his debut solo effort, his wife, Beatrice, was killed in a car accident in late 1996; still, Winger managed to support the album -- which was titled This Conversation Seems Like a Dream and released in 1997 -- with a solo acoustic tour.

Epinions.com - Kip Winger: don't hate me because I'm beautiful...(though my early lyrics were pretty ugly)
When Kip finally did make the scene with the band that bore his name (a pick borne of haste and need rather than any real consideration or forethought), they quickly broke into national prominence on the strength of a couple singles from their first album, Winger.
Kip's stellar vocals and his decently crafted songs garnered some critical attention for their atypical chords and rhythmic structures that often owed more to prog rock than metal.
Winger's third album Pull was easily their best work and a critical favorite - full of wonderful prog rock passages combined with Def Leppard-style vocal choruses and some outstanding guitar work - but against the onslaught from the northwest, Winger never had a chance; hair metal was done, and Winger faded quickly from public view.

This is Kip's third solo release, if you count his acoustic stuff, and the first one with new material written after the tragic death of his wife in a car wreck.
The mid-tempo tracks are sometimes similar to Winger's third and final CD Pull (although the guitar is nothing like as distorted as Reb Beach used to), but there are also a lot of slow songs, very reflective.
Winger were pretty popular in there time and wrote some cracking tunes such as 'Headed For A Heartbrake', 'Down Incognito' and 'Battle Stations' but ultimately they became one of the major casualties of the grunge movement and most fatally the scorn of Beavis and Butthead and split shortly after the release of 'Pull'.

All-Reviews.com Music Review: Songs From the Ocean Floor by Kip Winger
When the name Winger is usually heard, of course there are those decadent folks who imagine the passe hair band era or the Beavis and Butthead nerd that wore the Winger t-shirt.
Granted, some of Winger's music was simplistic, straightforward, pop/hard rock, but the band still created several Billboard-charting hits and then went on to release some even better tunes on their excellent swan song "Pull" (obviously overlooked by an industry too quick to kiss up to the new flavor of the times - grunge).
The primary focal point of Winger's music was the talent of Kip himself, with his well-rounded vocal, instrumental and songwriting abilities.

Kip Winger - Down Incognito   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
Winger proved to be an immediate success, producing US Top 30 singles in "Seventeen" (number 26, February 1989) and "Headed For A Heartbreak" (number 19, June 1989), while Kip Wingers rugged good looks turned him into a major sex symbol.
This rather worked against the band in press terms, and Winger were never really taken seriously by the UK rock press in particular, despite abilities which kept them in demand for musician-type magazines and a genuinely impressive debut.
In The Heart Of The Young consolidated Winger's US success, producing another enormous hit in "Miles Away" (number 12, October 1990), and the band were well received on their debut European shows, but the heavy touring schedule proved too much for Taylor, who subsequently departed, later working with Perry, Steve.

Songs From The Ocean - Kip Winger , Music Downloads - Online
Review: One of the last things Kip Winger released before taking a long sabbatical, Songs from the Ocean Floor was largely inspired and influenced by his trip to Egypt following the death of his wife in a car accident.
The events in Winger's life had a dramatic effect on the music of the disc, as his normally good-time rockin' self was replaced with a more introspective, somber singer delivering grittier performances than those of his pop-metal tenure (especially when compared to power ballad fluff like "Miles Away").
Although an expression of grief associated with personal tragedy, Songs from the Ocean Floor is quite a leap forward for Kip Winger in terms of maturity and musicianship.

 Interview with Kip Winger
Kip recorded and released a different-sounding solo CD, "This Conversation Sounds Like a Dream" which some critics compared to the brilliance of Sting and others laughed off as a commercial sell-out.
This year, after the untimely death of his wife and a seasoning of the years, Kip is back with "Songs From the Ocean Floor," another album that differs vastly from the hard rock sounds Winger (the band) was so popular for in its heyday.
But there is a maturity in "Songs," that there may not have been in Kip's earlier solo effort and the new CDs shining production values and vastly superior songwriting may open doors to the work of Kip Winger that have been closed before.

Being a child of the seventies, Kip Winger says that he considers good musical elements to be diversity, depth, and a musical variety, as well as good lyrics, and describes his solo records as "seventies records with nineties production, meaning its not ten songs that all sound the same."
The songs offer everything from familiar vocal harmonies and the electric and acoustic guitar sounds of Winger and Andy Timmons (Danger Danger) found on his first solo release to more elaborate orchestrated string arrangements and syncopated rhythms that add to the uniqueness of this album.
Though it may be hard for fans of Winger's pop singles to digest, a closer listen will uncover the maturity and strength behind the album, as well as a stream of emotions.

There is no question that Winger has long since paid his dues as a musician and as a man, and despite the tragedy life has dealt, he has continued to poor out his soul through his songs, with intelligent lyrics, unbelievable versatility, and remarkable strength.
And as he approaches the stage with a twelve-string, a guitar pick (which he seldom uses), and a microphone, he shows how a man and a guitar can bring the stage to life.
