| | Kipsigis Age-Set Transitions |
 | | In the nineteenth century the Kipsigis were settled pastoralists and hoe agriculturalists living in neighborhoods of 20 to 40 small homesteads concentrated in the hills at elevations between the high forest, occupied by small groups of Okiek ("Dorobo"), and lower grasslands, where the Kipsigis maintained cattle camps. |
 | | From the consideration of Kipsigis age-sets, however, it would appear that in many cases uncentralized processes, lacking points of vulnerability and possessing informational resilience, can be highly adaptive, and that their continued study promises insights of general analytical relevance. |
 | | 2 The seven set cycle of the Kipsigis and Nandi is shared by the Okiek ('Dorobo') of North Tinderet Forest (Huntingford 1951:30), the Terik (Sangree 1966:69,75), the Sebei on the Ugandan side of Mount Elgon (Goldschmidt 1976:104) and, presumably, by the closely related Sabiny or Sabaot on the Kenyan side. |
