Kirat Karni is one of three primary pillars of Sikhism.
The term means to earn an honest, pure and dedicated living by exercising ones God given skills, abilities, talents and hard labour for the benefit and improvement of the individual, their family and society at large.
To perform Kirat is like saying a prayer or performing meditation.

During his travels, Guru Nanak preferred to stay with the less privileged and the poorer people who worked hard and honestly to earn their livelihood.

I wish to make it amply clear that becoming amritdhari is an initiation and not a goal.
It marks the beginning of a formal relationship between a teacher (Guru) and a student (Sikh) with a curriculum (reht maryada) and a specific mission statement (kirat karni, Naam japna, wand chhakna).
This reminds me of the time when I was preparing to join medical school.
