Remembering baseball great Kirby Puckett. - By Jeremy Derfner - Slate Magazine
Puckett, who looked like a fire hydrant, was the only real ballplayer who lived in that world with me.
Like me, Puckett stood 5-feet-8 and told people he weighed 210 pounds, but that was only one aspect of his appeal.

Puckett's star burned brightest during Game Six of the 1991 World Series, which pitted the Twins against the Atlanta Braves in an unlikely matchup of teams that finished last in their division the season before.
Puckett would certainly have amassed more impressive career totals than his 2,304 safeties or 207 round-trippers (he batted.314 with 23 home runs in his final season) had he not awoken one day during spring training in 1996 with blurred vision that left him unable to continue playing the game he loved.

 Flak Magazine: Kirby Puckett, 04.28.06
Puckett's charisma, winning smile and rags-to-riches story — he was born and raised in the notorious Robert Taylor homes on Chicago's South Side — endeared him to Minnesotans, whose predominantly Lutheran and austere work ethic affords little tolerance toward bling-bling, show-offs, or outspoken, prima-donna athletes.
Puckett in Minnesota did what few athletes in the money ball era would dream of doing or have the patience or perspective to do: elevate a sad sack franchise through love of the game, determination and sheer force of will into a two-time champion, donning the same uniform the entire time.
Puckett's post-baseball life was also a harrowing reminder of a greater need for balance and perspective in one's individual life.
