Kirby dots - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kirby dots (sometimes Kirby Krackle) are an artistic convention in superhero and science fiction comic books and similar illustrations: a field of fl, roughly circular dots that are used to represent negative space around unspecified kinds of energy.
Kirby dots are named after Jack Kirby, the highly influential comic book artist whose superhero art frequently featured them.
They were developed from the use of a pattern of round fl spots to depict smoke or flying debris from explosions, or as a way to manually generate the random patterns that depict the path of lightning strikes.

Kirby, our first kitty, is technically a blue mackerel tabby (I believe), which just means he has the dilute gene (for fl) and has a tiger-stripe pattern (as opposed to swirls, dots etc).
Kirby is now also known as "The Expensive Kitty" after his bout of Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD), formerly known as Feline Urologic Syndrome (FUS).
In Kirby's case, at first I thought it was the stress from moving, but now I believe it was the fact that after moving we switched from a free-feeding schedule (which he had been on previously) to a fixed-feeding schedule (twice a day).

yellow Kirby wears a red and yellow jester hat with white polka dots (going by animé Mirror Kirby's look, they may have been stars, and may have been on both parts of the hat), and holds a green wand with a blue orb at the tip, which he generally keeps concealed unless he's attacking.

Kirby's platformers have always been great titles, but this is the first time one has ever had this degree of action and intensity.
Kirby and the game's enemies all feature amazing animation, but the real star here is the levels themselves, which look like one of a variety of painting styles, from beautiful watercolor landscapes to chic art deco, darker levels that seem to channel the works of Dali...
Kirby: Canvas Curse may not be a title people could take seriously as a "killer app", but in every other respect it fits that description pretty darn well.

 whatifkirby - stats
Jack Kirby (August 28, 1917 – February 6, 1994) was one of the most influential, recognizable, and prolific artists in United States comic books.
The Kirby and Simon partnership ended amicably in 1954 with the comic-book industry beset by self-imposed censorship and negative publicity and the failure of their own Mainline Publications.
Kirby then returned to Marvel Comics where he both wrote and drew Captain America and created his last major comics concept with the series The Eternals, which featured a race of inscrutable alien giants, the Celestials, whose behind-the-scenes intervention evolved life on Earth.

It's an example of how Kirby rarely if ever used subtle grading in any of his drawings but instead opted for full fl or clear white-a characteristic of his that no doubt was foundational in how and why he was able to discover his Krackle.
Suddenly, Kirby Krackle is everywhere as the Surfer and his board glow and sputter and seethe and writhe with barely contained energy.
It seems as if Kirby was from then on unable, or unwilling, to show any power packed fight scene with anything less than the high octane excitement that his krackling fl dots could create.

Kirby Canvas Curse is a completely new type of game that spans dozens of levels – each at least as long as your typical Kirby level – with a form of gameplay that actually is quite deep and enjoyable.
Kirby’s audio is just as good as ever, though keep in mind you’re getting mostly remixed versions of older Kirby songs.
While controlling Kirby can become irritating sometimes (such as when you are fighting your way through roaring winds on one particular level), you never feel cheated by the gameplay system.

The landmark series became a hit that revolutionized the industry with its true-to-life naturalism and, eventually, a cosmic purview informed by Kirby's seemingly boundless imagination—one that was coincidentally well-matched with the consciousness-expanding youth culture of the 1960s.
Kirby was often co-plotter of the stories he drew, in the style of the so-called Marvel Method, leading him to introduce elements not mentioned in Lee's scripts; in particular, Kirby is credited as having created the Silver Surfer, who was not mentioned in Lee's plot outline for the character's first appearance.

The "KIRBY CRACKLE" [Archive] - Penciljack Forum   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
The actual "Kirby dots" should take place around the actual projected rays of the blast (indeed it should frame your blast), so with that in mind, the next thing to do is to start adding in the largest "dots." Here, I've started from at the outer most corners of the panel.
One thing to remember when doing the "Kirby crackle" is that you want the effect to look somewhat random and natural--certainly not mechanical--so throw in the occasional large "dot" cluster near the blast radius and have several dots overlapping here and there from time to time.
I'm assuming in your example that you saying the kirby dots are essentially the same color as the background (fl) Thus it's really the white that is being rendered as the energy and that makes perfect sense.
