		Sandwiched between China’s far-western province of Xinjiang and the Central Asian state of Uzbekistan, Kirghizstan is located in a remote corner of Central Asia.
		He was in charge of our gear, our trekking route, and the removal of egg shells from our breakfast goulash which Vallery graciously added for “texture.” Aleksander spoke in a soft tone and could answer all of our questions concerning the Tien Shan mountains.
		Aleksander pointed out sights of interest along the trail and could always be counted on to extend a firm hand for balance while we navigated across icy rocks of many river crossings.

		Noise in the streets, chaos on the roads, where it doesn't matter how you drive, just so long as you swerve in time, small, low restaurants and stalls on every corner selling cigarettes, sunflower seeds and nuts, all of these are aspects of Asia.

	Kirghizstan 1997
		Below is a list of the bird species I saw on a trip to the Tien Shan Mountains in Kirghizstan in July/August 1997.
		The trip was an organised trekking group rather than a birding group, so birding was opportunistic, rather than the main purpose of the trip.
		Away from the mountains, there were two days of travelling between Almaty (in Kazakhstan) and Karakol (Kirghizstan), which resulted in some reasonably productive birding from bus windows, and an evening and morning at leisure at a lodge on the shores of Lake Issy Kul.
