Kirikaeshi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kirikaeshi (切り返し) is a kendo exercise, combining the practice of attacking and receiving strikes and is meant to develop physical strength, spirit, and vigor.
Kirikaeshi was established as a basic exercise around the end of the Meiji era (1868-1912).
Though the exact method of kirikaeshi can vary among dojo, the most common scheme involves a single strike to the center of the head, followed by four lateral strikes going forward (starting on the receiver's left side), and five strokes going backward.

Kendo World Forums - What is the purpose of kirikaeshi?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-08-20)
Kirikaeshi develops strong kiai and breath control, large motion, correct cutting angle (hasuji), correct grip (te no uchi, correct footwork (ashi sabaki) all with ki-ken-tai-ichi.
Kirikaeshi isn't that complex but somewhere between that and suburi men.
The one and only problem I see with kirikaeshi is a tendency of people to rush through it resulting in small strikes, or helicoptering, or a tendency to aim at the reciever's shinai instead of the men (I just lower my shinai and let them strike my men when juniors start doing this).

See if the hands are holding the shinai from on top, of course in kata we can see the grip easily but with kote on it is essential to look at the position of the elbows as the arms are raised to give an indication of whether the correct grip is employed.
The hardest thing about the kirikaeshi is if the opponent can't control the distance and they don't work as a pair (which is quite probable with the chance system that gradings are).
To make effective nidan waza the wrists must be powerful and not the arms, in kote-men combination watch the kensen is not pulled skywards with the right hand before the men is made, the footwork needs to be well coordinated and the body balanced.

Kirikaeshi is a drill done with a partner that involves a succession of strikes to the men.
Though the exact method of kirikaeshi can vary among dojo, the most common scheme involves a single strike to the center of the men, followed by four yokomen strikes going forward (starting on the receiver's left side), and five strokes going backward.
Kakari geiko means attacking practice continuously without stopping, and it was developed from kirikaeshi toward the end of the Taisho era (1912-1926).

 Grading Requirements
However, here is the best chance to see the ki ken tai, the cutting action, the footwork etc unhampered by nerves or the desire to put on a good show for the panel.
To make effective Nidan waza the wrists must be powerful and not the arms, in kote-men combination watch that the kensen is not pulled backwards with the right hand before the men is made, the footwork needs to be well co-ordinated and the body balanced.
Both sides of the kirikaeshi should be adequate for the grade, watch especially for the ability to control the maai so the attacker can cut in correct distance, men cuts that beat the receivers parry are an embarrassment to the receiver at this level.

Kirikaeshi, or the repetition of strokes, is considered a fundamentally important aspect of kendo training, and reflects the enduring influence of swordsmen like Ittosai and Tesshu (See the History section).
For the beginning kendoka, kirikaeshi is one of the major physical and mental hurdles to be surmounted on the path to proficiency in the art.
The monotonous practice of suburi and kirikaeshi were the dominant themes of early apprenticeship in the way of the sword.

There maybe better kihon exercises but kirikaeshi has all the basics, okuri-ashi, men cut, spirit, breath control ect....and for myself its something I'll always have to work on, as I belive it evolves along with your kendo.
I did not vote, because I believe each and everytime I perform Kirikaeshi (either recieving or attacking) I focus on a different aspect of my Kendo.
I know of no other single exercise that is equal to kirikaeshi in combining a warm up/cool down, stretching, practice of movement, posture, technique, respect, maai, timing, grip, tenouchi, stamina, and endurance.

Another important goal of suburi is to establish the proper posture at the moment one's sword contacts the target.
Kakari geiko means attacking practice, and it was developed from kirikaeshi toward the end of the Taisho era (1912-1926).
The Kendo Kata were established in 1912 by the Dai Nippon Budokai to help preserve correct sword technique because the use of the shinai alone is inadequate to teach proper grip and blade angle.

Whilst queing for him I was amazed at how he held the centre with fighter after fighter, using very economic movements, then when he cut, blam that was it straight down the middle everytime he seemed to catch his opponent napping.
He made me do kirikaeshi in front of the large mirror at the end of the dojo, and whaddya know my left hand kept the centre except for left yoko men, when it drifts in across my chest, another imbalance for the ever-growing list.
Well be careful of what you wish for, after a very tiring bout with YM sensei, I was at the back of a line trying to breathe when a sensei I have not been with before dragged me out to practice, it might be the sensei that teaches the Korean girls.

Thus, each kirikaeshi would consist of probbaly about 80-100 strokes, since you had to go back and forth across the width of the dojo a total of eight times (the size of a regular smallish gymnasium).
But it is remarkable what that kind of kirikaeshi can do for your legs, footwork, speed, stamina, and, most importantly, breath control and hara development.
We just don't do the all the way across the dojo version of kirikaeshi, but we usually do it (the 9 step version) about 3 to 5 times, with each set consisting of going forwards and backwards twice, so we get in 60-100 swings during kirikaeshi.
