Russian conductor Kiril Kondrashin (1914-1981) had a distinguished career in Russia before he came to the United States in 1958 to conduct Van Cliburn's famous Carnegie Hall concerts.
Kondrashin also was a favorite in Holland beginning in 1968 when he first appeared with the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra, and in 1975 was appointed permanent guest conductor (many of his fine Concertgebouw recordings were issued in 1993 in a Philips Collector limited edition).
Kondrashin and Van Cliburn made their famous recording of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 May 30, 1958 in Carnegie Hall with a hand-picked orchestra identified simply as "Symphony Orchestra." This superb performance already has been issued on JVC, sounding better than ever (REVIEW).

It does not, however, counter the fact that some of this centuries most brilliant musicians (two of which are in this CD) came out of Russia despite communism and musical suppression.
It may be noted that this is the same Kondrashin who made the memorable recording of Tchaikovsky's first with Van Cliburn, and that Svia.

The recording of Ode with the composer conducting the Boishoi Theater Orchestra is tolarable though not as atmospheric as Kondrashin's Tchaikovsky (excessive noise reductions claimed victims of many Melodiya/Russian Disc recordings and reissues).

This anthology gives you a good sense of what it was that made Janis in particular so exciting during his vintage years in the early '60s (before the arthritis that derailed his career had struck, and from which he has attempted a recent comeback).
Janis had a voracious appetite for taking risks, perhaps a part of the legacy of his one-on-one study with Vladimir Horowitz--but it's a kind of risk taking that is all his own and makes the concertos performed under Kiril Kondrashin (from a famous Moscow concert in 1962) pulse with discovery and excitement.
Solo pieces here are a mesmerizing, knock-out early Prokofiev Toccata and a deeply personal bit from a Schumann rarity (the variations from the Piano Sonata No. 3, known as "concerto without orchestra"), which is maddeningly ripped from its context and leaves you aching to hear the work entire.

The amazing thing is Cliburn, who possesses such nimble fingers, makes this difficult music seem so effortless.
Both Kondrashin and Reiner, as conductors, know their piano man is the star; their support could not be more sensitive and both orchestras engage their soloist in lively dialogue throughout.
There are enough famous themes here even for the neophyte to say, "Haven't I heard this in a movie somewhere?" For the rest of us, these piano concertos take us into the depths of our Romantic soul.
