Washingtonpost.com: Miss. Governor Ending Historic Tenure
Fordice's tenure has been dominated by controversial escapades, a record of legislative failure, mounting racial animosity and his emergence as a politician scarred by the contradiction between his Christian rhetoric and personal behavior.
Earlier this year, Fordice created a moment of acute embarrassment at an annual party at the mansion for Republican legislators when he insisted on reading aloud the roll call of GOP members who voted to override his vetoes, suggesting, as family members watched painfully, that these dissidents were unfit for the GOP.
Fordice's 25-minute address was met with an unprecedented silence at the historically celebratory event, as House and Senate members either seethed in their seats or pointedly paid no attention, popping candy and letting their eyes wander as Fordice plowed through his speech.

The Kirk Fordice Wreckage   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Kirk Fordice began much like the shiny automobile he drove to his fateful encounter with his concubine in Memphis, only to wind up alongside the road a twisted wreckage.
So, Fordice had the advantage of being a "businessman," which endeared him to the Republican hierarchy, as well as an unknown, who caught the attention of the "little guy." Having been a long-term Republican, Fordice pushed aside newcomer Pete Johnson in the primary, since only "loyalists" were voting in the GOP contest.
Fordice's most-endearing moment was at the National Governor's Conference, when he declared that "America is a Christian nation" and refused demands that he change the description to "Judeo" Christian.

Daniel Kirkwood "Kirk" Fordice Jr., 70, a gruff-talking Mississippi governor from 1992 through 2000 and a conservative Republican icon, died of complications from leukemia early today at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
Fordice, who left office in 2000, was active in the campaign to elect Gov. Haley Barbour last year and helped the Bush/Cheney re-election effort with fund-raising, but in recent months his illness slowed him down, Ingram said.
Fordice's greatest reputation was as a rabble-rouser who spoke no matter the topic or short-term political damage it may have caused him — which invariably petered out in days and added to his base of support.

News & Opinion: Secret Society (Memphis Flyer . 06-21-99)
In November 1996, when Mississippi governor Kirk Fordice was severely injured in an auto accident following a trip to Memphis, it was widely reported that he had been lunching at the Three Oaks Grill in Germantown with a woman, not his wife, who nonetheless remained unidentified in news accounts.
The mystery of Fordice's "unidentified companion" -- academic in light of Fordice's Friday announcement that he is seeking a divorce from his wife of 44 years in order to wed Creson, whose husband passed away last year -- is that rarest of birds in the media jungle: a story no one wanted to break.
Had Fordice's accident occurred in today's post-Lewinsky world, reporting Creson's identity may well have been a no-brainer, particularly given the governor's ties to the religious right.

Although he never sought elective office until running for governor, Fordice had a wide network of friends and potential backers from such activities such as serving as past president of the Mississippi Associated General Contractors and being active in his local Kiwanis Club.
