INXS guitarist Kirk Pengilly giggled as he looked at an advance "sell sheet" sent to Canadian retailers and the media prior to next week's release of the veteran Australian band's 10th studio album, Elegantly Wasted.
Pengilly, seated alongside keyboardist-songwriter-producer Andrew Farriss in a downtown hotel room yesterday, has been through the promotional rigmarole so many times in the last 17 years that mistakes just make him laugh now.
Adds Pengilly: "With the album before this one, Full Moon, Dirty Hearts, there was a bit of a feeling that we had to make it because it was the last one with Atlantic.

Pengilly, guitarist/saxophonist of INXS, the Australian rock band who made waves in The Gold Coast and beyond in the late ’90s, was playfully referring to Mig Ayesa, the 35-year-old Filipino musician/actor who made it to the final list of the contenders of Rockstar: INXS, the newest Mark Burnett creation for Star World.
Born in Manila but raised in Sydney, Ayesa is one of the 15 aspiring rockstars vying to be the next frontman of Inxs, whose original singer Michael Hutchence was found dead at the Ritz Carlton Double Bay Sydney in 1997.
Fortunately, the remaining band members (Pengilly, Farris, Garry Beers, Andrew Farriss, and Jon Farriss) did not let grief and disappointment get the better of them, having lost not only a figurehead, but a close friend of 20 years as well.

It's a suitably rock'n'roll tableau in which to find Andrew Farriss and Kirk Pengilly, who together form one third of one of the most successful rock bands of the past three decades.
Farriss and his two brothers Jon and Tim, had asked Pengilly, Garry Beers and a 17-year-old Hutchence to join their band, at that point known as the Farriss Brothers.
If Pengilly is a slightly nervy character, Farriss seems almost traumatised by the experience of being here, which is perplexing since he must have spoken to hundreds of journalists in his time.

 INXS
And despite Michael Hutchence's cryptic, seductive lyrics, and their appealing blend of funk bass, rock guitars, and Kirk Pengilly's steamy sax, their lack of musical and lyrical depth always made them more of a teen idol act than a critics' fave.
Much of this had to do with Hutchence, who was a blessing and a curse: his rippling baritone was a powerful emotional vehicle, but often the only emotion he chose to express was smarmy, sneering, oversexed self-worship.
Pengilly's squawking sax gives it some personality, but Hutchence sounds exactly like any other ska raver of the time; there's almost nothing hinting at his later, sultry R & B persona.
