Kirk Shelmerdine said his story sounded like an old cliche about the mechanic wanting to be a racecar driver.
Shelmerdine, 47, of Media, Pa., toiled for six years at RCR, compiling a record of 46 wins, 246 top-10 finishes, and 14 poles, before he left to pursue his dream to race, starting out on the ARCA circuit in 1993.
But Shelmerdine, a veteran of some 30 Cup starts, was unaware he had made the field when he pulled his car into the garage area after finishing 16th in the second heat of Thursday's 150-mile Gatorade Duel qualifying races at Daytona International Speedway.
