Soon Kirk became "the" opening act for jazz shows that came to Houston and in 1983 he caught the ear of jazz pianist Bob James, who was so impressed with the young Whalum that two weeks later Kirk found himself in New York soloing on Bob’s album, Bob James 12.
Kirk began his relationship with Warner Bros. Records in 1996 when he and Bob James collaborated on Joined at the Hip and received a Grammy nomination for their effort.
Kirk later signed with Warner Bros. and in ‘97 released his first solo album for that label, Colors, which was inspired by Kirk’s appreciation for cultural and musical diversity as well as his passion for racial reconciliation.

Whalum signed with Columbia and released his first solo album, Floppy Disk, in 1985.

In 2001, Whalum was recording again for Warner Brothers and released Unconditional, his third album for the label.

Whalum's ingenious use of traditional choral vocals to provide a foundation for non melodically contrived improvisation without losing those who would normally dismiss other forms of improvisation as “noise”, allows many for the first time to experience jazz as a vehicle and not an end in itself.
Whalum hints at the true extent of his awesome chops on the Brazilian flavored “With All My Might”, note the Getz quote on the second chorus of his solo.The traditional classic “Lord I Want To Be A Christian” is hauntingly beautiful, rendered as an emotional ballad, whispered as a prayer to heaven.

Jazz saxophonist who was brought up in the church gives us a totally different perspective with this recording.
I’ve always been a sucker for vocal acappella harmonies, we get that on "The Little (Ghetto) Drummer Boy" with Whalum playing along with Kevin Whalum singing both Lead and background vocals and Kyle Whalum on "Beat Box" vocals and electric bass.
If you have listened to Kirk Whalum in the past you know how soulful he can get and he accomplishes that on "Amazin Grace." A lot of positive stuff here, but on the negative side the last third of the record is not very jazzy.
