Ruskin's View, just outside the town, was painted by Turner and praised by John Ruskin.
The town is also famous as a motorbike enthusiast's meeting place; this happens every Sunday at Devil's Bridge.This parish in bounded by Yorkshire, Lancashire, and the parishes of Burton and Kendal, and comprises the greater part of Lonsdale Ward, being about ten miles in length and from four to six in breadth.

"Kirkby Lonsdale, that is the kirk-town in Lonsdale, hath its name from the dale in which it is situate, through which the river Lon (corruptly called Lune) runs all along from north to south; which river also gives name to the town of Lancaster; at which place the said river runs into the sea.
Kirkby Lonsdale is the largest town in the county, next unto Kendal; and is beautifully situate upon the banks of the river, over which there is a large stone bridge of three arches; for the repair of which bridge, there was a grant of pontage in the third year of King Edward the first.
"LONSDALE, or Kirkby Lonsdale, that is, the Church Town in Lonsdale, so called, because it stands in the Tract, which adjoining to the River Lone, is called the Vale of the Lone, where it is the chief Town, to which the neighbouring Inhabitants resort to Church and Market.

Whilst touring Britain in April/May 1998 we stopped for a break in Kirkby Lonsdale, en route to The Lake District, to view The Devil Bridge, which we had read about before leaving Australia.
The walk to the Bridge starts from a sign-posted lane in the south east corner of the town square.
The poor widows only other possession was a small dog and on provision of the bridge she picked the little dog up and threw it across the bridge, thus thwarting the Devil and saving her own soul.
