Kirkcudbright, (pronounced [kɪrˈkuːbri]) the county town of Kirkcudbrightshire, is a town in the south of Scotland in Dumfries and Galloway, south of Castle Douglas and Dalbeattie, in the part of Dumfries and Galloway known as the Stewartry, situated at the mouth of the River Dee, some six miles from the sea.
In 1453, Kirkcudbright became a royal burgh, and about a hundred years later the magistrates of the town obtained permission from Queen Mary to use part of the convent and nunnery as a parish church.
Kirkcudbright has had a long association with the Glasgow art movement, which started when a colony of artists, including the Glasgow Boys and the famed Scottish Colourists, such as S.

Kirkcudbright was anciently a burgh of regality, and held of the Douglases, Lords of Galloway, as superiors.
Sir Patrick Maclellan, proprietor of the barony of Bombie, in the parish of Kirkcudbright, incurred forfeiture in consequence of marauding depredations on the lands of the Douglases, Lords of Galloway, and by the eighth Earl of Douglas was beheaded at Threave Castle in 1452.
The presbytery of Kirkcudbright comprises the quoad civilia parishes of Anwoth, Balmaclellan, Balmaghie, Borgue, Buittle, Carsphairn, Crossmichael, Dalry, Girthon, Kells, Kelton, Kirkcudbright, Parton, Rerwick, Tongueland, and Twynholm, and the quoad sacra parishes of Auchencairn, Castle-Douglas, and Corsock.

At one time Kirkcudbright was merely the eastern half of the province of Galloway, but Robert Bruce gave it the dignity and title of a Stewartry (that is, a district ruled by a steward of the King), the present county town being its capital.
Lochfergus lies almost due east of Kirkcudbright and is reached either by the road which runs in a north-easterly direction to Dalbeattie, or by a pleasant footpath ramble by way of Barrhill, through the woods of Kirkland, and finally by the fields.
Kirkcudbright, and is accessible by a good main road which, a little way out of the town, is carried across the Dee by Telford's Bridge.

 Kirkcudbright's Lifeboat Station
THE ROYAL National Lifeboat Institution was founded in 1824, but it was not until 1861 or 1862 that a local lifeboat committee was formed in Kirkcudbright, and the first lifeboat placed on station.
It soon became clear that most of the vessels in difficulties had got into them in the bay, either on the bar, or when their anchors dragged as they sought shelter off Little Ross Island.
To get out to them, the lifeboat at Kirkcudbright had to be rowed for at least three miles, often against the tide and almost always against the wind.
