The proposed use of Adams Mine, an abandoned open pit mine close to Kirkland Lake, as a massive dump for waste brought by rail from Toronto, was a defining issue in Kirkland Lake politics – and indeed in Toronto politics and Ontario politics – from the late 1990s to the early 2000s.

The Lake Shore mine is located in the center of the Kirkland Lake camp bounded to the west by the Teck-Hughes mine and to the east by the Wright-Hargreaves mine.
Lake Shore may be thought of as the "crown jewel" of the Kirkland Lake camp, for it was by far the largest gold producer, producing 8,499,199 ounces at a grade of 0.51 oz/T from continuous production from 1918 unti1 1965.
Mining at Lake Shore was almost entirely within intrusive rocks except in the upper levels of the mine to the 800 foot level, where ore was found in conglomerate on the north side of the North (No.2) vein.

The City of Kirkland was named after a British-born steel tycoon, Peter Kirk, who came to the Northwest in the 1880s seeking new development opportunities.
Despite the steel mill's closure, Kirkland incorporated in 1905 with a population of 400.
The primary concern of the new Kirkland City Council was the improvement of roads, buildings, and the Lake Washington shoreline.

Fort Temiscamingue on Lake Temiskaming was established by the French in 1695.
Missionaries and loggers were active on the lake as early as the 1830's, but the first permanent settlement was at the present town of Haileybury in 1885.
Settlement was accelerated when the TandNO Railway arrived at Lake Temiskaming in 1904, but the railway also brought with it the discovery of silver at Cobalt, resulting in a mining boom, which in subsequent years spread to Elk Lake (1906), Gowganada and Larder Lake (1907) and in Kirkland Lake in 1911.

In 1911 W.H. Wright found a large deposit of gold just east of Swastika, near Kirkland Lake, about 100 km north of Cobalt.
Development was delayed by the upheavals of World War I, but in the 1920s large-scale commercial gold production made Kirkland Lake another of Canada's important mining communities.
A number of smaller mines were opened to the east of Kirkland Lake, many of which relied upon the hydro-electric power and processing plants built to supply the large original producers in the area.
