  Kirklees light railway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Kirklees light railway is a Narrow gauge railway in Kirklees, consisting of 4 miles of 15 inch (381 mm) gauge line running along an old branch line which used to connect Clayton West and Skelmanthorpe with the main Sheffield-Huddersfield line.
The permission to construct the railway was granted by Kirklees Council on the 27 September 1991, the line was originally 1 mile in length running from Clayton West station to a specially constructed stop called "Cuckoos Nest".
The KLR is situated in Clayton West, on the A636, about two miles (3 km) west of Junction 39 of the M1 motorway.

The railway operates passenger services at weekends and on public holidays over approximately 1 mile of track between its headquarters at Moor Road, Hunslet, Leeds, and Park Halt on the outskirts of Middleton Park.
In June 1960, the Middleton Railway became the first standard-gauge railway to be taken over and operated by unpaid volunteers.
The Middleton Railway is home to a representative selection of locomotives built by the famous Leeds manufacturers of John Fowler, Hudswell Clarke, Hunslet Engine Company, Kitson and Co. and Manning Wardle.

Yet the KLR is deserving of a place high in the league tables of fifteen-inch gauge railways.
Whilst Brian Taylor still owns the railway he has tended to take a back seat in recent years and the operating and continued development that takes place is very much a combined effort between the permanent KLR staff and its small band of loyal volunteers.
The KLR is well worth visiting, after all where else can you travel behind a Meyer or Heisler locomotive in Britain, and the sheer thrill of a medium sized fifteen inch gauge locomotive bucketing along at fifteen miles an hour up through the darkness of Shelley Woodhouse tunnel is a treat to behold.

Subject to the provisions of this Order the Company's railway may be worked as a light railway under the principal Act.
The Company's railway shall be constructed on a nominal gauge of 381 millimetres (fifteen inches) and the motive power on the railway shall be diesel-mechanical, diesel-hydraulic, diesel-electric, steam, internal combustion or such other motive power as the Secretary of State may approve:

 Kirklees Light Railway
The Kirklees Light Railway in the county of West Yorkshire in the UK.
A while after the standard gauge was closed and lifted the line's creator Brian Taylor moved in and started to built the KLR, gradually extending it to a station at Shelley less than 100 metres short of the former junction with the mainline.
GPCS was first successfully used on steam railway locomotives in Argentina under the direction of L.D.Porta on the Rio Turbio to Rio Gallegos 750mm coal line.

This splendid new attraction has been purposely built to recreate the atmosphere of the fussy little branch line which once fed the main railway with passengers and freight.
There is a model railway that encircles the ornamental pond, which although small, is capable of carrying adults as well as children.
The railway terminus is situated midway between Wakefield, Barnsley, Holmfirth and Huddersfield, approximately 8 miles from each on the A636 wakefield to denby Dale road.

KLR runs on the roadbed of the Clayton West branch at 15" gauge, including a run through the standard gauge Skelmanthorpe tunnel.
I'm with Simon on the Central Railways proposal - nice idea, but I suspect getting parlimentary time is the least of the hurdles it faces - once the NIMBY contingent wakes up it'll probably get buried in parliment or take so long to get planning approval that the potential investors will lose interest.
The Central Railway is intended to move goods (containers) from the north and midlands directly to continental europe, thus removing tens of thousands of trucks from overcrowded roads.

As well as the steam trains, a small model railway encircles an ornamental pond offering rides for children (as well as adults).

The project will include all five of the lines current locos, with realistic cabviews and soundpacks along with some 'blasts from the past', as well as authentically modelled coaches and wagons.
I plan to have the section up to Cuckoo's Nest complete for approx the middle of august, hopefully with another 'interactive preview' at the line around that time.
