  Kirkstall Abbey - Introduction
One of Britain's best preserved abbeys, Kirkstall Abbey was founded in 1152 by a party of Cistercian monks from Fountains Abbey and was closed down in November 1539 in the Dissolution of religious houses ordered by Henry VIII.
Kirkstall Abbey is one of the most important buildings historically in Leeds.
Nevertheless, Kirkstall is still preferred by many historians to other Cistercian abbeys such as those found at Fountains and Rievaulx.

Kirkstall Abbey is a ruined Cistercian monastery in the outskirts of Leeds in Yorkshire, set in grounds on the north bank of the River Aire.
The English Cistercian houses, of which there are such extensive and beautiful remains at Fountains, Rievaulx, Kirkstall, Tintern, Netley, etc., were mainly arranged after the same plan, with slight local variations.
The church here is of the Cistercian type, with a short chancel of two squares, and transepts with three eastward chapels to each, divided by solid walls (2 2 2).

The ruins of Kirkstall are now situated on the outskirts of Leeds, some three miles from the city centre.
The site is bisected by the A65 Kirkstall Road, but in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries the main thoroughfare to Leeds actually ran through the nave of the church.
In the nineteenth century the local newspaper reported that ghostly apparitions had been observed in the nave of the church; one witness claimed to have seen a funeral procession of sombre men, clad in white, proceeding slowly down the nave.

The important grange of Micklethwaite was alienated, and the monks seem to have blamed him for that loss, for which he was not responsible, as well as others, such as that of a golden chalice and a text of the Gospels, which he had given to Henry II to gain his good will.
For the nine years of his abbacy he remained at Kirkstall with his monks struggling with poverty until he was chosen Abbot of Fountains in 1191, and was succeeded by Lambert, one of the twelve monks who forty - two years before had left Fountains to found the Abbey of Barnoldswick.
It mainly lay in the neighbourhood of the abbey, in Blackburnshire, and in the East Riding, the latter being the property purchased from the abbey of St. Martin near Albemarle.

At this stage the Council resolved to establish a "Kirkstall Valley Park" along the River Aire, stretching from the Armley Mills Industrial Museum nearest the city centre, to the open countryside near Rodley.
Kirkstall Valley Nature Reserve is a linear reserve bounded by the River Aire and the Leeds Liverpool Canal.

The weirs at Armley Mills and Kirkstall Abbey date from medieval times, but during the 18th and 19th centuries the valley became a major centre for the woollen industry, and a complex network of weirs and goits was constructed to supply additional energy.
Although Kirkstall power station was still zoned as industrial land, the entire area between the River Aire and Kirkstall Road was allocated as playing fields and public open space in the 1972 Development Plan Review.

The Kirkstall Valley campaign was founded on 27 June 1988 when two of the Kirkstall councillors [John Illingworth and Liz Minkin] met a group of local residents who were concerned by rumours of a major new development scheme.
The Council was already seeking derelict land grant from the government to restore the site of the former Kirkstall Power Station, and it appears that large areas of adjacent non-derelict land (that were actually public open space) were added by Council officers to improve the marketability of the site.
There was no political discussion of these proposals, and all three Kirkstall councillors were astonished to learn in June 1988 that LCDC had entered into a partnership with Mountleigh Northern Developments Ltd to develop the whole of the Kirkstall Valley.

Police are appealing for witnesses following a robbery that occurred on Sunday 7 January in the Kirkstall area of Leeds.
At around 12:00pm a 19-year old local woman was walking in the area of the junction of Kirkstall Hill and Eden Grove in Kirkstall when she was approached from behind by a lone male who, without warning, assaulted her and stole her mobile phone.
