Kirtland is a city located in Lake County, Ohio, USA.
From 1831 to 1838, Kirtland was the headquarters for the Church of Christ (Mormonism) (it would change its name to Church of the Latter Day Saints in 1834, and after leaving Kirtland to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints) (Mormons).
The Saints built their first temple there, which is a significant tourist attraction currently owned and operated by the Community of Christ.

 Jared Potter Kirtland
Jared Potter Kirtland was a naturalist, horticulturalist, and politician as well as a physician and co-founder of Western Reserve University's Medical School (referred to as the Medical Department).
Potter was a physician and naturalist and under his supervision, Kirtland became an expert in cultivating trees and flowers, and assisted in caring for a large plantation of white mulberry trees used to cultivate silk worms.
Kirtland gained credit for treating patients during an epidemic of sinking typhus, throughout many counties in Ohio, at a time when traveling conditions could be harsh and treacherous.

It was Kirtland's son-in-law who found the small, blue-gray and yellow bird, which was likely on its way back to Michigan after having spent the winter in the Bahamas, their exclusive migration destination.
Kirtland's warblers are believed to have originally nested in 13 counties in Michigan, and, based on non-breeding males sighted during annual surveys, they may also have nested in the Upper Peninsula, Wisconsin and Canada.
The Kirtland's Warbler Recovery Team was established in 1975 by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to monitor the recovery of the warblers and to insure that the objectives of the Recovery Plan are met.

She told reporters after the dedicatory service that it was "a great event for Ohio, and I'm sure for the members of the church." Tourism generated by the project "is going to be significant" and won't be limited simply to church members, she said.

In 1940 The Kirtland Society was organized within the CMNH for the members to promote amateur research and the first active division out of this was the Division of Ornithology of the Kirtland Society, which shortened its name to the Kirtland Bird Club.
Kirtland’s son-in-law Charles Pease collected [shot] the bird on Kirtland’s farm in Lakewood (then Rockport) in 1851 and gave it to Kirtland, who subsequently gave the skin to Baird on one of his visits through Ohio.
