Kiruna is a city in northernmost Sweden with 19,000 inhabitants; and 23,000 in the Kiruna Municipality.
Kiruna became a Swedish city in 1948, and was at one time listed as the largest city in the world by area, but after the Swedish municipality reform in the 1970s, the term "city" has been discontinued.
Kiruna is one of 134 towns with the historical City status in Sweden.

The Kiruna orebody was formed at around 1,600Ma following intense volcanic activity with the precipitation of iron-rich solutions on to a syenite porphyry footwall.
As of the end of 2004, LKAB estimated that the current proven reserve at the mine is 657Mt grading 48.3% iron, with probable reserves of 140Mt at 46.5% iron.
After blasting, load-haul-dump machines carry the run-of-mine ore to the nearest ore pass, from which it is loaded automatically on to one of the trains operating on the 1,045m level.

In 1888 was opened the section from Lulea, on the Baltic Sea, to Boden and Kiruna; but the Lulea Harbour is isolated by ice many months per year, so in 1898 began the construction of the line to Narvik, on the Atlantic Sea, that was completed in 1902.
The line is completely at single track, and actually is equipped with modern control system for the safety (ATS) and start from Kiruna Central Station, where is also situated the LKAB (the public company that manage the mine) charge terminal, and the engines depot and workshops.
There are guided tour for the Kiruna mine plant, and in Lulea there is the museum of the line where are stored old steam and electric engines.

Latitude: 67°53'38" N. Longitude: 21°06'25" E. The sounding rocket launch site at Kiruna was officially opened in September 1966 under the auspices of ESRO (European Space Research Organisation).

The road we decided on was the E10, which runs from the Gulf of Bothnia in Sweden, through Kiruna, and eventually to the Norwegian town of Å on the western tip of Lofoten Island in the Norwegian Sea.
Turning away from the Gulf, we headed back north along the E10 to Kiruna, and had another brief stop at the Arctic Circle Centre which was, unfortunately, closed.
